17:20-37 This is the first of two discourses in Luke’s Gospel on the coming of the Kingdom and the return of the Son of Man (see also ch 21).
The Greek text does not indicate when Jesus said the words in this section. Scholars believe that he said them during the same time period as the last section. During this time, Jesus was making his final journey to Jerusalem. The Pharisees asked him when the kingdom of God would come. Jesus answered by describing the way the Son of Man, the Messiah, will return to earth. He will return suddenly, and it will be obvious to everyone that he has returned. Jesus compared his return to how suddenly the flood came in the time of Noah and how suddenly Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed in the time of Lot.

Parallel passages are in Matthew 24:17–18, 24:23–28, 24:37–41, and Mark 13:14–16, 13:19–23.
In this paragraph Jesus told his disciples that they must not delay to take any of their possessions when he returns. There are two ways to interpret this instruction:
Jesus was speaking in a figurative way. He warned that a person must not be concerned about possessions when he (Jesus) returns.
Jesus was speaking literally. Jesus warned that they must not delay to take their possessions, but instead, they must flee from danger that is coming.
English versions are ambiguous. It is recommended that you also translate in an ambiguous way so that either interpretation may be understood. If that is not possible, it is recommended that you follow interpretation (1).Commentators who follow this interpretation include Arndt, Erdman, Geldenhuys, Godet, Plummer, Lenski, Liefeld, Green, Marshall, Hendriksen, Nolland, Tolbert, TH, and Morris. This context in Luke is different from the one in Mark, where Jesus’ disciples should flee from the destruction of Jerusalem. Here in Luke, Jesus is returning, and no one can run from him.
This verse is very similar to 9:24. See the notes there (9:24a and 9:24b). It is also similar to Mark 8:35. Jesus talked about two types of “life” in this verse: physical, earthly life without God and eternal life with God. It is important to understand this difference in order to understand the verse.
Jesus was talking about two kinds of people:
Some people continue to control what they do here on earth and do not submit to God. Those people will lose the opportunity to live eternally with him.
Some people submit to God and follow his will here on earth. They will live eternally with God.
Whoever tries to save his life will lose it,
The people who strive to preserve/protect their lives will never receive/gain eternal life with God.
If a person seeks to keep on living and is not willing to die for me, that person forfeits life with God.
Whoever tries to save his life: The clause Whoever tries to save his life refers to any person who is determined to continue living. Such a person is not willing to suffer and die for Jesus. Instead, he wants to save or preserve his own way of life. Some ways to translate this clause are:
whoever seeks to protect his own life
If you cling to your life (NLT)
a person who wants to guard his life on this earth
People who try to save their lives (CEV)
See save, Meaning 1, in the Glossary.The Greek verb that the BSB translates as “save” occurs only here in the NT. It has virtually the same meaning in this context as the Greek verb that is often translated as “save.” (Some Greek manuscripts have the verb “save” here. Although the other text is preferred, translators may use whichever verb expresses the meaning most naturally here. See Metzger (p. 167) for more information.)
In some languages it may be necessary to translate life as a verb. For example:
whoever tries/seeks to continue living
will lose it: The phrase will lose it refers to losing true life, which is life with God that lasts forever. A person who loses his life in this sense will fail to experience it either here on earth or in heaven after he dies. He will eventually lose his physical life because no one can live forever. He will also forfeit the opportunity to gain true life with God.
In some languages, a literal translation of lose may imply that a person misplaces something and is unable to find it. It may also imply that a person who already has eternal life will lose it. Be careful to avoid both these implications. Some ways to express the correct meaning are:
will forfeit true life
will lose the opportunity to gain eternal life
will not gain life with God
will not be able to live forever with God
but whoever loses his life will preserve it.
But the people who surrender their lives will receive eternal life with God.
But if a person is willing to die for me, that person will live with God forever.
but whoever loses his life will preserve it: This clause indicates that a person who willingly gives up his life on earth will gain eternal life with God in heaven. Other ways to translate this clause are:
…those who lose their lives will save them. (GW)
…and if you let your life go, you will save it. (NLT)
And that person who does not set his heart on his life…he will be given life without end.
The parallel passage in Mark 8:35 says “whoever loses his life for My sake and for the gospel.” The context here in Luke also implies that Jesus referred to his disciples who lose their lives for him. In some languages it may be necessary to make that explicit.Several back translations on TW make this information explicit. For example: “But whoever lets-go of his desires because of his following of Me, even if it kills him, he is the one who will get eternal life” (Uma). “But whoever does not cherish/love his life because of me, even though he dies he has life forever” (Yakan). “And that person who does not set his heart on his life, because he wants to follow me, he will be given life without end” (Western Bukidnon Manobo). “But the one who dies because of his faith in me, he will have life that has no end” (Kankanaey). For example:
who loses his life for me will save it
whoever is willing to die for me will gain eternal life
In some languages it may be necessary to translate life as a verb. For example:
whoever is willing to die will live forever
