Open English Translation MAT Chapter 16

16 Some people from the Farisaios’ party and some from the Saddoukaios (Sadducee) sect approached Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus), and, trying to tempt him, they asked him to make a sign in the sky to show his power to them.[ref] 2 But he replied, 3 ◘ 4 “This is an evil and adulterous generation that’s wanting a sign, and no sign will be given to it except for the sign of Yonah (Jonah).”[ref] Then he left them and went away.

5 Now Yeshua’s (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) apprentices had crossed the lake, but they forgot to take any bread, 6 and Yeshua told them, “Watch out for the yeast from the Farisaios and the Saddoukaios (Sadducees).”[ref]

7 This caused a discussion among them, trying to figure out if he was scolding them for not bringing any bread.

8 But Yeshua knew what they were saying, and asked them, “You people with little faith, why are you talking to each other about not having bread? 9 Haven’t you understood what’s going on here yet? Don’t you remember that there were twelve baskets of leftovers when five buns were used to feed 5,000 families?[ref] 10 And then seven baskets of leftovers when seven buns were used to feed 4,000 families?[ref] 11 How can you fail to understand that I wasn’t talking to you about bread? Watch out for the yeast from the Farisaios and Saddoukaios.

12 Then they understood that he wasn’t talking about yeast that’s used to make bread, but about the teachings of the Farisaios’ party and of the Saddoukaios sect.

13 When Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) arrived in the outskirts of Kaisareia-Filippi (Caesarea Philippi), he asked his apprentices, “Who are people saying the son of humanity is?”

14 “Some say Yohan-the-immerser come back to life,” they answered, “but others say the promised prophet Eliyah (Elijah), and others, Yirmiyah (Jeremiah) or one of the other prophets.”[ref]

15 “But you yourselves,” he asked, “Who do you say I am?”

16 “You’re the promised messiah,” Shim’on (Simon) Kefa (Peter; Grk. Petros) answered, “the son of the living god.”[ref]

17 Then Yeshua answered, “You are blessed, Shim’on BarYonah, because it wasn’t any person that revealed that to you, but rather, my father who’s in the heavens. 18 And I can add that you’re Kefa (meaning ‘rock’), and I’ll build my assembly on that rock, and hell’s gates won’t be able to hold it back. 19 I’ll give you the heavenly kingdom’s keys, and whatever you restrain on the earth will be restrained in the heavens, and whatever you free on the earth will be freed in the heavens.”[ref]

20 Then he instructed his apprentices not to tell anyone that he’s the messiah.

21 From that time onwards, Yeshua (Jesus; Grk. Yesus) began showing his apprentices that he needed to go to Yerushalem (Jerusalem) and to suffer at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and religious teachers there, before being executed and then coming back to life on the third day.

22 But Kefa (Peter; Grk. Petros) took him aside and started telling him off, saying, “Goodness gracious, master, this certainly won’t happen to you.”

23 Yeshua turned towards Kefa and said, “Get behind me, Satan. You’re tempting me because you’re not thinking in a godly way, but only in human terms.”

24 Then Yeshua told his apprentices, “If anyone wants to follow me, they need to suppress their own desires and be ready to sacrifice and to suffer, and then follow me,[ref] 25 because anyone who wants to save their life will lose it, but anyone who loses their life on my account will find it.[ref] 26 What help would it be to a person if they gain everything in the world, and yet lose their soul? Or put another way, what could a person give in exchange for their soul? 27 The son of humanity is going to return displaying his father’s splendour, accompanied by his messengers,[ref] and then he’ll reward each individual according to their behaviour.[ref] 28 I can assure you that some people standing here won’t experience death until they first see the son of humanity coming as king.”
