Readers’ Version

Literal Version

58Shout loudly. Don’t hold back.

≈ Raise your voice like a trumpet

and confront my people with their wickedness,

≈ and Yakov’s descendants with their disobedience.

2They search for me every day

and want to learn about my ways like a nation that does what is right,

and they haven’t abandoned the values of their god.

They ask me to make judgements that are far and right.

They want god to approach them.

3Why did we fast, as you didn’t even look?

We humbled ourselves and you didn’t even notice?

Listen, when you fasted was it just for your own needs?

You all certainly drive your labourers hard!

4Look, you all fast with strife and contention,

and strike out with vicious clenched fists.

You all don’t fast today to make your voices heard up on high.

5Is that the kind of fasting that I would choose?

A day when a person humbles themself and bows their head down like a bulrush does.

They wear sackcloth and form a bed of ashes to sit on.

Is that really a fast that’s acceptable to Yahweh?

6Isn’t this the fast that I would prefer?

When you all remove chains that were wickedly put on others,

≈ and undo the ropes from the yoke that forced them to comply?

Let go all those who’ve been crushed,

≈ and break every yoke that burdened them.

7Isn’t it to share your food with those who’re hungry,

≈ and to bring the poor, homeless people into your house?

When you see someone naked, clothe them,

≈ and don’t hide yourself from your own relatives.

8Then your light will break through like the dawn,

≈ and your healing will quickly spring up.

Your right actions will go ahead of you

≈ and Yahweh’s honour will follow along behind you.

9Then you’ll call out and Yahweh will answer.

You’’ll cry for help and he’ll say, ‘Here I am.’

If you remove the burden of the yoke from among you,

as well as the pointing finger and wicked speech,

10give yourself to the hungry

and give those who are suffering what they need

then your light will rise in the darkness

and your darkness will be like the noonday.

11Then Yahweh will continually lead you

and satisfy your appetite in arid regions.

He’ll strengthen your bones and will be like a watered garden,

and like a spring that never runs dry.

12Then some of you will rebuild the ancient ruins

≈ you’ll restore the foundations from generations ago

and you’ll be called the repairer of the wall—

≈ the one who restores streets to live in.

58call_out with_a_throat do_not refrain like_trumpet raise voice_of_your and_declare to_people_of_my transgression_of_their and_to_the_house_of Yaˊₐqoⱱ/(Jacob) sins_of_their.
2And_me day day they_seek and_the_knowledge_of my_ways_of_my they_desire like_a_nation which righteousness it_has_done and_the_judgement_of his/its_god not it_has_abandoned they_ask_me judgements_of righteousness the_approach_of god they_desire.
3To/for_what have_we_fasted and_not you_have_seen have_we_humbled self_of_our and_not you_know there in/on_day your_fasting_of_your(pl) you(pl)_find pleasure and_all labourers_of_your(pl) you(pl)_drive_hard.
4There for_strife and_contention you(pl)_fast and_to_strike with_a_fist_of wickedness not you(pl)_fast like_day to_make_heard in_height[s] voice_of_your(pl).
5Like_this is_it the_fast which_I_choose_it a_day_of to_humble anyone self_of_his to_bow_down like_a_bulrush his/its_head and_sackcloth and_ash[es] he_spreads_as_a_bed (to)_this do_you_call a_fast and_a_day_of acceptance to/for_YHWH.
6Am_not is_this the_fast which_I_choose_it to_untie/release the_bonds_of wickedness to_unfasten the_bindings_of the_yoke-bar and_to_let_go those_who_are_crushed free and_all yoke-bar you(pl)_will_tear_apart.
7Am_not is_it_to_break for_person bread_of_your and_poor_people homeless_people you_will_bring a_house if/because you_will_see the_naked and_you_will_cover_him and_from_your_own_of_flesh not you_will_hide_yourself.
8Then it_will_break_forth like_dawn light_of_your and_healing_of_your quickly it_will_spring_up and_it_will_go to_your_face righteousness_of_your the_glory_of YHWH it_will_be_your_rearguard.
9Then you_will_call and_YHWH he_will_answer you_will_cry_for_help and_he_will_say here_I_am if you_will_remove from_among_of_you the_yoke-bar the_stretching_out a_finger and_the_speaking wickedness.
10And_you_will_offer to_person self_of_your and_a_person_of afflicted you_will_satisfy and_it_will_rise in_darkness light_of_your and_gloom_of_your will_like_the_noon(s).
11And_he_will_lead_you YHWH continually and_he_will_satisfy in_arid_regions appetite_of_your and_bones_of_your he_will_strengthen and_you_will_be like_a_garden watered and_like_a_spring_of waters which not they_will_fail waters_of_its.
12And_they_will_rebuild some_of_you the_ruins_of antiquity the_foundations_of a_generation and_a_generation you_will_raise_up and_it_will_be_called to/for_yourself(m) one_who_walls_up a_breach one_who_restores paths to_dwell_in.

13If on the rest day, you turn back from what you wanted to do

and don’t try to please yourself on my sacred day,

enjoy Yahweh’s sacred and honourable rest day,

and honour it instead of doing your own activities such as finding your own pleasure or delivering a speech,

14then you’ll take delight in Yahweh.

I’ll make you ride on the heights of the earth,

and I’ll give you the same blessings that I gave your ancestor, Yakov (Jacob).

That’s what Yahweh has spoken.

13If you_will_turn_back from_the_sabbath foot_of_your to_do pleasures_of_your in/on_day my_holiness_of_my and_you_will_call (to)_sabbath a_delight (to)_the_holy_day_of YHWH honourable and_you_will_honour_it from_doing ways_of_your_own from_finding pleasure_of_your and_to_speak a_message.
14Then you_will_take_delight on YHWH and_I_will_make_you_ride on the_high_places_of[fn][fn] the_land and_I_will_feed_you the_inheritance_of Yaˊₐqoⱱ/(Jacob) I_will_show_you(ms) if/because the_mouth_of YHWH it_has_spoken.
