Readers’ Version

Literal Version

44Now listen Yakov (Jacob) my servant,

and Yisrael (Israel) who I’ve chosen.

2The one who made you and formed you in the womb,

Yahweh says this:

Don’t be afraid, Yakov my servant,

and Yisrael who I’ve chosen,

3because I’ll pour water out onto the thirsty ground

≈ and streams on the dry ground.

I’ll pour my spirit out onto your offspring

≈ and my blessing onto your descendants.

4They’ll spring up among the grasses

like poplars beside flowing streams.

5This one will say that they’re in favour of Yahweh,

≈ and that one will out Yakob’s name out.

Another one will write ‘Belonging to Yahweh’ on their hand,

≈ and others will use the title ‘From Yisrael’.

6Yisrael’s king and the one who bought their freedom,

Commander-in-chief Yahweh says this:

I’m the first and the last,[ref]

≈ and there’s no other god—just me.

7Yes, who’s like me? Let him proclaim it,

≈ and let him declare it.

Let him recount to me the historical sequence of how this nation was established in the past,

≈ and let them declare what’s about to happen.

8Don’t dread the future

≈ and don’t be afraid.

Didn’t I already declare it to you

≈ and announce what would happen, and you all are my witnesses?

Is there some other god[fn] than me?

There’s no other ‘rock’ that I know of.

44and_now listen Oh_Yaˊₐqoⱱ servant_of_my and_Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) whom_I_have_chosen in_him/it.
2Thus YHWH he_says who_made_of_you and_who_formed_of_you from_the_womb he_will_help_you do_not be_afraid my_servant_of_my Yaˊₐqoⱱ/(Jacob) and_Yəshurūn/(Jeshurun) whom_I_have_chosen in_him/it.
3If/because I_will_pour_out water on thirsty_ground and_streams on dry_ground I_will_pour_out my_breath/wind/spirit on offspring_of_your and_blessing_of_my on descendants_of_your.
4And_they_will_spring_up in_between herbage like_poplars at watercourses_of water.
5This_one he_will_say to/for_YHWH I and_this he_will_call_out with_the_name_of Yaˊₐqoⱱ and_this he_will_write his/its_hand to/for_YHWH and_with_the_name_of Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) he_will_give_a_title.
6thus YHWH he_says the_king_of Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) and_redeemer_of_its YHWH soldiers/messengers I am_first and_I am_last and_(from)_except_me there_is_not a_god.
7And_who is_like_me let_him_proclaim_it and_let_him_declare_it and_let_him_recount_it_in_order to_me from_when_I_established a_people_of antiquity the_coming_things and_which they_will_come let_them_declare to_them.
8Do_not be_in_dread and_do_not fear not from_then did_I_proclaim_to_you and_did_I_declare and_you(pl) witnesses_of_are_my is_there a_god (from)_except_me and_there_is_not a_rock not I_know.

9All those who form idols are losers

≈ and their expectations won’t be realised.

Their witnesses can’t see and they don’t know anything,

so they’ll be ashamed.

10Who would form a god

≈ or an idol that never helps them?

11All their associates will be put to shame

craftsmen are just human beings.

Let all of them gather together and take their stand.

≈ Let them dread the consequences and be ashamed together.

12The blacksmith takes a tool and works on the iron over the coals.

≈ He hammers it with his strong arm to form it into shape.

But then he gets hungry and feels weaker.

≈ If he doesn’t drink water, he’ll feel exhausted.

13The carpenter measures a piece of wood.

He outlines it with a marker and works it with his chisels.

He outlines it with a compass and makes it like the figure of a man—

like a good-looking man who might live in a house.

14He cuts down cedar trees

or selects a cypress or an oak.

He lets it grow strong among the trees in the forest.

He plants a fir tree and the rain makes it grow.

15Then the wood is used by humankind to burn.

≈ The carpenter uses some of the wood to warm himself,

Yes, he kindles a fire and bakes bread on it.

He also makes a god out of it and bows down to it.

≈ He makes the wood into an idol and kneels in front of it.

16He burns half of the wood for the fire,

and roasts meat on that half—he eats the meat and is satisfied.

He also warms himself and says ‘Aha, I’m warm,’ as he looks at the fire.

17He uses the rest of the wood to make a god.

He makes an idol and kneels in front of it.

≈ He bows down and prays to it

→ and says, ‘Rescue me, because you’re my god.’

18Those people don’t know and don’t understand

because their eyes are plastered over so they can’t see

≈ and their minds are prevented from having insight.

19No one gives much thought to their actions.

They don’t apply knowledge and understanding, to say,

‘I burnt half of the wood in the fire and baked bread on the coals.

I roasted meat on it and ate it.

Then I’ll take the remainder to make a detestable idol.

I’ll bow down to a piece of wood from a tree.’

20He eats thanks to those ashes.

He’s deceived and been led astray.

He doesn’t escape from his own situation and say,

‘I’m holding a lie in my right hand.’

21Remember that, Yakov (Jacob),

≈ and Yisrael (Israel) because you’re my servant.

I formed you—you’re my servant Yisrael—I won’t forget about you.

22I’ve blotted out your disobedience like a cloud.

and your sins like a fog.

Return to me because I paid the price for your freedom.

23Shout happily you skies because Yahweh has taken action.

≈ Shout triumphantly you depths of the earth.

Sing loudly you mountains and forests and all you trees

because Yahweh has paid the price for Yakov’s freedom

≈ and will be honoured by Yisrael.

24Yahweh, the one who paid for your freedom

and the one who formed you in the womb, says this:

I am Yahweh who made everything,

who alone stretched out the skies and formed the earth.

Who was it who helped me?

25Who else frustrates the sign of empty-talkers,

and makes diviners look foolish?[ref]

Who else turns wise people back

and makes their knowledge seem foolish?

26Who else confirms the words of his prophet,

and fulfills the advice of his messengers

who say that Yerushalem will be inhabited,

and that Yehudah’s towns will be rebuilt,

and the country’s ruins will be rebuilt?

27Who else tells the deep sea to dry out,

and makes your rivers dry up?

28Who else calls King Cyrus (Heb. Koresh) ‘my shepherd’,[ref]

and says that he’ll do everything I want?

Who else says that Yerushalem will be rebuilt,

and that the temple foundations will be restored.

44:8 This is the only place where Yeshayah uses Eloah (singular) for God instead of Elohim (plural).

9those_who_form_of (of)_an_idol of_them_of_all are_nothingness and_their_desired_of_things not they_confer_profit and_witnesses_of_their they[fn] not they_see and_not they_know so_that they_may_be_ashamed.

12A_craftsman_of iron a_tool and_he_works_it on_charcoal and_with_hammers he_forms_it and_he_worked_it with_the_arm_of his_strength_of_his also he_is_hungry and_there_is_not strength not he_drinks water and_he_grew_weary.
13A_craftsman_of wood(s) he_stretches_out a_measuring-line he_outlines_it with_marker he_works_it with_(the)_tools and_with_compass he_outlines_it and_he_made_it like_the_form_of a_man like_the_beauty_of a_man to_dwell a_house.

16Of_it_of_half he_burns in a_fire over of_it_of_half meat he_eats he_roasts roasted_meat and_he_is_satisfied also he_is_warm and_he_says aha I_am_warm I_see a_fire.
17And_the_remainder_of_of_it (into)_a_god he_makes (into)_idol_of_his he_prostrates_himself[fn] to_him/it and_he_bows_down and_he_prays to_him/it and_he_says deliver_me if/because god_of_are_my you.
18Not they_know and_not they_understand if/because it_is_besmeared from_seeing eyes_of_their from_having_insight hearts_of_their.
19And_not he_brings_back to his/its_heart and_not knowledge and_not understanding to_say of_it_of_half I_burnt in a_fire and_also I_baked on coals_of_its bread I_roasted meat and_I_ate_it and_the_remainder_of_of_it (into)_an_abomination will_I_make to_a_product_of a_tree will_I_prostrate_myself.
20he_is_feeding ash[es] a_heart which_it_is_deceived it_has_turned_him_aside and_not he_will_deliver DOM self_of_his and_not he_will_say am_not is_falsehood in_my_right_of_hand.
21remember these_things Oh_Yaˊₐqoⱱ/(Jacob) and_Oh_Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) if/because servant_of_are_my you I_formed_you are_a_servant to_me you Oh_Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) not you_will_be_forgotten_by_me.
22I_have_wiped_out like_(the)_cloud transgressions_of_your and_like_cloud sins_of_your return to_me if/because I_have_redeemed_you.
