Readers’ Version

Literal Version

29You won’t end well Ariel—the town where David camped.

Year follows year—let the holidays come around,

2but I’ll bring distress to Ariel

and there’ll be mourning and wailing

and it’ll become like an altar hearth[fn] to me.

3Then I’ll get troops to camp all around you and besiege you—

building towers and ramps against your fortified walls.

4You’ll be brought down and will speak from the ground,

≈ and your words will come from the dust.

Your voice will sound like a spirit speaking out of the ground,

and your speech will whisper from the dust.

5But the multitude of foreigners will be like fine dust,

≈ and that mass of ruthless people will be like chaff that gets blown away.

and it will happen so suddenly.

6Commander-in-chief Yahweh will send thunder, an earthquake, and a loud noise,

a strong gale, a windstorm and a fire burning things up.

7It’ll be like a dream—a vision in the night.

Many of the world’s nations will go to war against Ariel.

All those will attack its fortifications and put her under distress.

8It’ll be like a hungry person dreaming and eating in the dream, then waking up with an empty stomach.

≈ Or like a thirsty person dreaming and drinking in the dream, then waking up with a dry throat and feeling faint.

That’s what it’ll be like for all those nations which go to war against Mt. Tsiyyon (Zion).

29woe_to ʼArīʼēl ʼArīʼēl the_town_of (of)_where_he_camped Dāvid add year to year festivals let_them_go_around.
2And_I_will_bring_distress to_ʼArīʼēl and_it_will_be mourning and_lamentation and_it_will_be to/for_me like_an_altar_hearth.
3And_I_will_encamp like_circle on_you and_I_will_lay_siege on_you siege-works and_I_will_raise on_you fortifications.
4And_you_will_become_low from_the_ground you_will_speak and_from_the_dust utterance_of_your it_will_be_humbled and_it_was like_a_necromancer from_the_ground voice_of_your and_from_the_dust utterance_of_your it_will_whisper.
5And_it_was like_dust fine the_multitude_of your_strangers and_will_be_like_chaff which_passes_away the_multitude_of ruthless_people and_it_was to_suddenness suddenly.
6From_with YHWH hosts it_will_be_visited with_thunder and_with_earthquake and_a_sound great a_storm-wind and_a_tempest and_a_flame_of fire devouring.
7And_it_was like_a_dream a_vision_of the_night the_multitude_of all_of the_nations which_go_to_war on ʼArīʼēl and_all those_of_who_go_to_war_against_it and_stronghold_of_its and_those_who_bring_distress to/for_her/it.
8And_it_was just_as he_dreams the_hungry_person and_see/lo/see he_is_eating and_he_awakes and_is_empty appetite_of_his and_as_which he_dreams the_thirsty_person and_see/lo/see he_is_drinking and_he_awakes and_see/lo/see he_is_faint and_throat_of_his is_longing so it_will_be the_multitude_of all_of the_nations which_go_to_war on the_mountain_of Tsiyyōn/(Zion).

9Astonish yourselves and be astonished.

≈ Blind yourselves and be blind.

Get drunk, but not with wine.

≈ Stagger, but not from strong drink,

10because Yahweh has poured a spirit of deep sleep out onto you all,[ref]

and has shut your prophets’ eyes,

≈ and has covered your visionaries’ heads.

11Then to you all, the entire vision will be like the words sealed in a scroll

if it’s handed to a person who’s educated to read out, they’ll say, ‘I can’t, because it is sealed up.’

12^ Or if the scroll is given to an uneducated person to read out, they’ll say, ‘I can’t read.’

13My master says,

Yes, those people come close to me with what their mouths say,

≈ and honour me with lipservice,

but their heart is far from me,

≈ and their respect for me is just something that they’ve been taught to do.[ref]

14Because of that, I’ll confound those people again with wonder upon wonder.

The wisdom of the wise will vanish,

≈ and the intelligence of the intelligent will be hidden.”[fn][ref]

9delay and_be_astonished blind_yourselves and_be_blind people_have_become_drunk and_not wine people_have_staggered and_not strong_drink.
10If/because he_has_poured_out on_you(pl) YHWH a_spirit_of deep_sleep and_he_has_shut DOM your(pl)_eyes DOM the_prophets and_DOM heads_of_your(pl) the_seers he_has_covered.
11And_it_became to/for_you(pl) the_vision_of the_whole like_the_words/messages_of the_scroll (the)_sealed which people_give DOM_him/it to one_who_knows_of the[fn] to_say read_aloud please this and_saying(ms) not I_am_able if/because is_sealed it.
12And_it_is_given the_scroll to one_who not writing he_knows to_say read_aloud please this and_saying(ms) not I_know writing.
13my_master and_he/it_said because if/because it_has_drawn_near the_people the_this with_mouth_of_its and_with_lips_of_its they_have_honoured_me and_heart_of_its it_has_made_far_away from_me and_it_became fearing_their DOM_me a_command_of people which_has_been_taught.
14For_so/thus/hence here_I he_will_repeat to_deal_wonderfully_with DOM the_people the_this very_(deal_wonderfully) and_a_wonder and_it_will_perish the_wisdom_of its_wise_people and_the_understanding_of its_understanding_people it_will_hide_itself.

15Those who keep their plans down deep to hide them from Yahweh, won’t end well,

and they did what they wanted in dark places, saying, “Who can see us? Who could know what we’re doing?”

16Your thinking is crazy!

It’s as if the potter’s clay, the thing that was made by him, would be considered to say, ‘He didn’t make me.’

≈ Or if the pot said to the potter, ‘He doesn’t understand.’[ref]

17Hasn’t it been just a little while,

and Lebanon will turn into an orchard,

and the orchard will be considered as a forest?[ref]

18At that time, deaf people will be able to hear the words from a scroll,

≈ and from their gloom and darkness, the eyes of blind people will be able to see.

19The people of low status will be happy again because of Yahweh,

≈ and the poor people among us will celebrate because of Yisrael’s holy one,

20because ruthless people and mockers will come to an end,

≈ and all those who plan wicked schemes will be eliminated

21those who give false evidence against a person,

and lay a trap at the city gate for the person who arbitrates,

and who deprive the innocent person of justice.

22That’s why Yahweh (who redeemed Avraham) says this to Yakob’s descendants:

My people will no longer be ashamed

no longer will their faces be pale with fear,

23because when they see their children who are the result of my work among them,

they will regard my name and reputation as sacred

≈ and they will regard me as sacred and and will show respect to me.

24Then those whose spirits go astray, will know understanding,

≈ and those who murmur will learn insight.

29:2 Here we use one of the possible translations of ‘ʼArīʼēl’ (rather than transliterating it as a name), but none of those three possible options seem to make a lot of sense.

29:14 Septuagint: I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will hide the intelligence of the intelligent. Cited in 1 Corinthians 1:19.

15woe_to those_who_make_deep from_YHWH to_hide a_plan and_it_was in_a_dark_place deeds_of_their and_they_said who is_seeing_of_us and_who is_knowing_of_us.
16Perversity_of_your(pl) (if) like_clay_of the_potter will_he_be_regarded (cmp) it_will_say a_thing_made to_the_one_of_who_made_it not he_made_me and_a_pot it_said to_potter_of_its not he_has_understood.
17Am_not yet a_little_of a_little and_it_will_turn Ləⱱānōn into_orchard and_the_orchard to_forest it_will_be_considered.
18And_they_will_hear in_day (the)_that the_deaf_people the_words/messages_of a_scroll and_from_gloom and_from_darkness the_eyes_of blind_people they_will_see.
19And_they_will_add humble_people in_YHWH joy and_needy_people_of humankind in_the_holy_one_of Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) they_will_be_glad.
20If/because he_will_come_to_an_end the_ruthless_person and_he_will_come_to_an_end the_mocker and_ all_of _they_will_be_cut_off wickedness those_who_lie_in_wait_of.
21those_who_cause_to_sin_of (of)_a_person with_a_message and_for_who]_adjudicates in_gate they_lay_a_trap and_they_have_turned_aside with_emptiness the_righteous_person.
22for_so/thus/hence thus YHWH he_says to the_house_of Yaˊₐqoⱱ/(Jacob) who he_redeemed DOM ʼAⱱrāhām not now Yaˊₐqoⱱ it_will_be_ashamed and_not now his/its_faces/face they_will_grow_pale.
23If/because when_sees_it children_of_its the_work_of my_hands_of_my in_midst_of_its they_will_regard_as_holy name_of_my and_they_will_regard_as_holy DOM the_holy_one_of Yaˊₐqoⱱ and_DOM the_god_of Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) they_will_regard_with_awe.
24And_they_will_know those_who_go_astray_of spirit understanding and_those_who_murmur they_will_learn insight.
