9:1 The coming king

9 [ref]◙

2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a powerful light.

≈The light has shone on those who’ve lived in a land of darkness.[ref]

3 You have multiplied the nation itself.

You’ve increased its happiness.

≈They celebrate in front of you

like the happiness at harvest time.

≈Like their excitement when dividing the plunder,

4 because you’ve shattered the chains on its neck,

and the stick whacking its shoulders.

You’ve broken the rod of his oppressor

like when you defeated Midyan.

5 Yes, every warrior’s boot treading loudly will be burnt,

along with every piece of clothing with blood on it,

6 because a child is born for us.

A son is given to us

≈and the government will be on his shoulder.

He’ll be called ‘Amazing adviser’,

‘Greatest God’, ‘Forever father’, ‘Prince of peace’.

7 His government will be without borders—

with peace that’s never broken.

He’ll rule on David’s throne, and over his kingdom,

to establish it and sustain it with justice and with fairness from now onwards.

The zeal of army commander Yahweh will do that.[ref]

4 [fn] if/because every _of boot which_marches in/on/at/with_battle and_garment rolled in/on/at/with_blood and_be to_burning fuel _of a _fire.
5 [fn] if/because a _child he _will _be _born to/for_us a _son he _will _be _given to/for_us and_it _became the_government on shoulders _of_his and_he/it _called his/its_name a _wonder _of a _counsellor god mighty father _of until[fn] prince _of peace.
6 [fn] of_increase _of[fn][fn] the_government and_of_peace there_will_not_be an _end on the _throne _of Dāvid and_over his/its_kingdom to_establish DOM_her/it and_to_uphold_it in/on/at/with_justice and_in/on/at/with_righteousness from_now and_unto perpetuity the _zeal _of YHWH hosts it _will _accomplish this.
7 [fn] a _message my_master he _has _sent in/on/at/with_Yaˊₐqoⱱ/(Jacob) and_fell in/on/at/with_Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel).

9:8 The cursing of God of Yisrael

8 My master sent a message against Yakov,

≈and it dealt with Yisrael,

9 and all the people will know it—

Efraim and those who live in Samarya.

With a proud and arrogant heart they’ll say,

10 “The bricks have fallen, but we’ll rebuild with beautiful chiselled stone.

The sycamores are felled, but we’ll replace them with expensive cedar.”

14 [fn] an _old_man and_one _being _lifted _of face he the_head and_prophets who_teaches falsehood he the_tail.
15 [fn] and_they _were the _guides _of the_people the_this leading _astray and_guided _of_them were_confused.
16 [fn] on/upon/above/on _account _of//he/it _went _in yes/correct/thus/so on young _men _of_his/its not he _rejoices my_master and_DOM orphans _of_his/its and_DOM widows _of_his/its not he _has _compassion _on if/because everyone _of_them is_godless and_evildoer and_all mouth is_speaking disgraceful _folly in_all this not it _has _turned _back anger _of_his and_still his/its_hand is_stretched _out.

19 [fn] and_gorged on the_right _side and_hungry and_devoured on the_left _side and_not they _were _satisfied everyone the _flesh _of arm _of_his _own they _ate.
20 [fn] Mənashsheh DOM ʼEfrayim and_ʼEfrayim DOM Mənashsheh together they were_on Yəhūdāh/(Judah) in_all this not it _has _turned _back anger _of_his and_still his/its_hand is_stretched _out.
