9 However, it won’t not cover over those who are distressed. Previously he humiliated the Zevulun and Naftali regions, but later, he’ll honour the way of the sea—beyond the Yarden river—Galilee of the nations.[ref]

9 [fn] the_people which_walk in_darkness they _will _see a _light great those _who_dwell _of in_land deep _darkness a _light it _will _shine on_them.

9:2 The coming king

2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a powerful light.

≈ The light has shone on those who’ve lived in a land of darkness.[ref]

3 You have multiplied the nation itself.

You’ve increased its happiness.

≈ They celebrate in front of you

like the happiness at harvest time.

≈ Like their excitement when dividing the plunder,

4 because you’ve shattered the chains on its neck,

and the stick whacking its shoulders.

You’ve broken the rod of his oppressor

like when you defeated Midyan.

5 Yes, every warrior’s boot treading loudly will be burnt,

along with every piece of clothing with blood on it,

6 because a child is born for us.

A son is given to us

≈ and the government will be on his shoulder.

He’ll be called ‘Amazing adviser’,

‘Greatest God’, ‘Forever father’, ‘Prince of peace’.

7 His government will be without borders—

with peace that’s never broken.

He’ll rule on David’s throne, and over his kingdom,

to establish it and sustain it with justice and with fairness from now onwards.

The zeal of army commander Yahweh will do that.[ref]

2 [fn] you _will _multiply the_nation wwww[fn] you _will _magnify the_rejoicing they _will _rejoice to_your_face like_the _rejoicing _of at_harvest just_as people _are _glad when_they_divide plunder.
3 [fn] if/because DOM the _yoke _of its _burden _of_of and_DOM the _staff _of its _shoulder _of_of the _rod _of the_one _who_oppresses in/on/over_him/it you _will _shatter like_the _day _of Midyān.
4 [fn] if/because every _of boot which_marches with_shaking and_cloak rolled in_blood(s) and_it _will _be to_burning fuel _of a _fire.
5 [fn] if/because a _child he _will _be _born to/for_us a _son he _will _be _given to/for_us and_it _became the_dominion on shoulder _of_his and_he/it _called his/its_name a _wonder _of a _counsellor god mighty father _of perpetuity[fn] prince _of peace.
6 [fn] to_the _increase _of[fn][fn] of_the _dominion and_to_peace there_will_not_be an _end on the _throne _of Dāvid and_over his/its_kingdom to_establish DOM_her/it and_to_sustain_it in_justice and_in_righteousness from_now and_unto perpetuity the _zeal _of YHWH hosts it _will _accomplish this.
7 [fn] a _message my_master he _has _sent in_Yaˊₐqoⱱ/(Jacob) and_it _will _fall on_Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel).

9:8 Yahweh’s anger at Yisrael

8 My master sent a message against Yakov,

≈ and it dealt with Yisrael,

9 and all the people will know it—

Efrayim and those who live in Samarya.

With a proud and arrogant heart they’ll say,

10 “The bricks have fallen, but we’ll rebuild with beautiful chiselled stone.

≈ The sycamores are felled, but we’ll replace them with expensive cedar.”

11 But Yahweh will send King Retsin against them as an adversary,

and will stir up their enemies—

12 the Arameans on the east and the Philistines on the west,

and they’ll be a big mouth that’ll gobble Yisrael up.

Even then, Yahweh’s anger won’t subside.

≈ He’ll still be taking action against them.

13 The people still won’t return to the one who struck them,

≈ and they won’t strive to know army commander Yahweh

14 so he’ll cut off Yisrael’s head and tail—

high palm branches and low reeds, all on the same day.

15 Yisrael’s leaders are that head,

and the lying prophets are that tail.

16 These people’s guides have led them the wrong way,

so the ones being guided were destroyed.

17 Therefore, my master won’t be happy about their young men,

nor will he have compassion for their fatherless and their widows,

because everyone one of them is godless and does evil things,

and every mouth speaks out foolish things.

With all that going on, his anger never goes away,

and he continues to take action against them

18 because wickedness burns like fire.

It burns up the thistles and thorns,

and it spreads to the trees in the forest

as smoke swirls up into the air.

19 Army commander Yahweh’s anger causes the entire land to be scorched,

and then the people become the fuel for the fire

as each man doesn’t even spare his own brother.

20 They devoured on the right but were still hungry.

They ate on the left, but it didn’t fill them up,

so everyone ate the flesh on their own arms.

21 Menashsheh fought Efrayim, then Efrayim found Menashsheh,

then they fought together against Yehudah.

Even through all that, his anger didn’t subside,

and he continues to take action against them.

10 [fn] and_ YHWH _he _set _on _high DOM the _foes _of Rəʦīn on/upon/above_him/it and_DOM enemies _of_his he _provoked.
11 [fn] ʼArām from_east and_Fəlishtiy from_the_west and_they _consumed DOM Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel) in_all the_mouth in_all this not it _has _turned _back anger _of_his and_still his/its_hand is_stretched _out.
12 [fn] and_the_people not it _has _turned _back to the_one_who_of_struck _it and_DOM YHWH hosts not they _have _sought.
13 [fn] and_ YHWH _he _cut _off from_Yisrā^ʼēl/(Israel) head and_tail palm _branch and_bulrush day one.
14 [fn] an _old_man and_one _who_is_uplifted _of face he is_the_head and_a _prophet who_teaches falsehood he is_the_tail.
15 [fn] and_they _were the _guides _of the _people the_this leading _astray and_those _of_who _were_guided _by _him were_confused.
16 [fn] therefore yes/correct/thus/so on men _of_its _young not he _rejoices my_master and_DOM ones _of_its _fatherless and_DOM widows _of_its not he _has _compassion _on if/because of _it _of_all is_godless and_doing _evil and_all mouth is_speaking disgraceful _folly in_all this not it _has _turned _back anger _of_his and_still his/its_hand is_stretched _out.
17 [fn] if/because it _has _burnt like_fire wickedness thorn[s] and_bush[es] it _consumes and_it _has _kindled (in)_the_thickets _of the _forest and_they _have _swirled a _rising _up _of smoke.
18 [fn] by_the _severe _anger _of YHWH hosts the_land it _has _been _scorched and_he/it _was the_people like_fuel _of a _fire each (to) his/its_woman not they _spared.
19 [fn] and_it _devoured on the_right _side and_it _was _hungry and_it _ate on the_left _side and_not they _were _satisfied everyone the _flesh _of his _own _arm _of_of they _ate.
20 [fn] Mənashsheh DOM ʼEfrayim and_ʼEfrayim DOM Mənashsheh together they were_on Yəhūdāh/(Judah) in_all this not it _has _turned _back anger _of_his and_still his/its_hand is_stretched _out.
