The question about marriage in heaven

Mat 22:23–33

Mark 12:18–27

Luke 20:27–40

22:23 The question about marriage in heaven

(Mark 12:18-27, Luke 20:27-40)

23[ref]On that day some from the Sadducee sect (who claim there’s no resurrection) approached Yeshua and asked, 24[ref]Teacher, Mosheh wrote that if a married man dies childless, his brother should marry the widow and so raise up children for his deceased brother. 25Well, there were seven brothers amongst up, and the first one got married and then died childless. So his brother married the widow. 26The same happened for the second brother, and the third, all the way to the seventh. 27Finally the woman died. 28Now then, in the resurrection, which of the brothers will she be the wife of, because they were all married to her?”

29You’ve got it wrong,Yeshua answered, “because you don’t understand either the scriptures or God’s power, 30because in the resurrection, there’ll be no marrying or getting engaged, because they’ll be like the messengers in heaven. 31But as for the resurrection of the dead, isn’t it written in the scriptures that God said, 32[ref]I am Abraham’s God and Isaac’s God and Yacob’s God.’? So God is not the god of the dead, but of the living.

33When the crowds heard his answer, they were amazed at his teaching.

12:18 Yeshua explains that those who’ve died are alive

(Mat. 22:23-33, Luke 20:27-40)

18[ref]Another time, members of the Sadducee sect came to Yeshua and asked, 19[ref]Teacher, Mosheh wrote that if a man’s married brother should die before his wife without having any children, then his brother should marry her to produce descendants in his brother’s name. 20Now what if there were seven brothers and the first one got married and died childless. 21So then the second brother took her in, but again died childless, and then the third. 22Eventually all seven brothers died childless, and finally the woman also died. 23Now, at the resurrection of the dead, which brother will she be the wife of, because at some point, she was married to each of the seven of them?”

24So Yeshua answered, “Actually you’re all quite wrong, because you ignore the scriptures and also because you haven’t experienced God’s power. 25When the dead do come back to life, they won’t be getting engaged or married, but will be like the messengers in heaven. 26[ref]And as for the state of those who’ve died, didn’t you read in the scriptures about Mosheh when God spoke to him in front of the burning thorn bush and said, ‘I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Yacob’? 27So God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You Sadducees are very wrong!

20:27 The question about the resurrection

(Mark 12:18-27, Mat. 22:23-33)

27[ref]Then some from the Sadducee sect came. They claim there’s no resurrection, and they asked Yeshua, 28[ref]Teacher, Mosheh wrote for us that if anyone’s married brother should die childless, then the surviving brother should take in the widow so they can produce children in the deceased brother’s name. 29Once there were seven brothers and the first one had a wife but died without having children. 30Then the second brother 31and the third took her, right through to the seventh, and without leaving any children, they all eventually died. 32Finally, the woman also died. 33So when they’re resurrected, which brother will she be the wife of, because all seven had her as their wife?”

34Yeshua answered them, “This generation get engaged and married, 35but in the next age, those who’re considered worthy to be brought back to life from the dead won’t get engaged or marry, 36because they can’t die again, but rather they’re like God’s messengers and are God’s children, being children of the resurrection. 37[ref]But about the dead being raised, Mosheh revealed it at the burning thorn bush when he called Yahweh the god of Abraham and of Isaac and of Yacob, 38so God is not the god of the dead, but of the living, because to him everyone is living.

39Teacher, you answered well,” some of the religious teachers affirmed, 40and no one dared to ask him anything else after that.
