20:36 In this respect they will be like angels: Angels are not married, and they are immortal. The Bible never teaches that people become angels (cp. Heb 1:5–2:18), but that we will be like them.
The Jewish leaders continued to challenge Jesus’ authority and the things that he was teaching. In this section some Sadducees asked Jesus a question to try to show that his teaching was wrong. Like the Pharisees, the Sadducees were another group of Jewish leaders with certain religious beliefs. Many of the Sadducees were priests. They did not believe that God would cause anyone who had died to live again.
Jesus taught that God does cause people who have died to live again. The Sadducees tried to use this belief to trick Jesus in 20:27–40. They told a story to ridicule these beliefs that Jesus taught. The story was not true, but they used it to ask a question. They thought that if a person believed that people who died could live again, there was no sensible answer to the question.
The Sadducees based their story on the custom that is described in Deuteronomy 25:5–6. This scripture teaches that if an Israelite woman did not have any children by her husband before he died, her husband’s brother should marry her. Their first child would have the name of his dead brother and would be the heir of the dead brother.This custom was called levirate marriage. Jewish people considered the first son that the widow bore after marrying the brother of her dead husband to be the son of her dead husband, not the son of the man who was now her husband. This meant that this son and his descendants would carry on the dead man’s family and family name through future generations. Any sons born after this to the woman and her living husband would carry on the name of the living husband for future generations. In that way, the dead man’s family and family name could continue through future generations. Since the Scripture taught this custom, the Sadducees believed that they could prove from Scripture that Jesus was wrong.

In this paragraph Jesus gave the Sadducees an answer that had two parts:
In 20:34–36, he explained that when people die and live again, they will have a new kind of life. They will not marry, just as angels do not marry. (See the notes on 20:36a–b.)
In 20:37–38, he reminded them what God said in one of the books of Moses. God indicated that the great ancestors of the Jewish people were still alive with him. This showed that God does cause people to live again after they die.

In fact, they can no longer die, because they are like the angels: In 20:36a–b Jesus explained why people do not marry in the resurrection (20:35). The reason is that they will live forever like the angels. They will not need to marry and have children to ensure that human beings will continue to exist. The clause they can no longer dieSome Greek manuscripts have “going to die.” However, the Notes has followed the reading that the UBS committee recommends (“can…die”). The committee gave this reading a high rating that indicates that the text is almost certain. tells the way that people in the resurrection are like the angels. The angels do not die, and they also will not die.
Some other ways to translate 20:36a–b are:
Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels (NRSV)
And they will never die again. In this respect they will be like angels (NLT)
for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels (NASB)
In some languages it may be helpful to change the order of these clauses. For example:
36bIn that life they are like angels 36aand cannot die. (NCV)
In fact…because: In the Greek text, 20:36a and 20:36b each begin with the conjunction that is often translated as “for.” The BSB translates these words as In fact and because. The conjunction indicates that Jesus was explaining what he said in 20:35. Many English versions do not use a conjunction like “for” in either 20:36a or 20:36b, because the context already implies that 20:36a–b explains 20:35. Translate the explanation in a natural way in your language. See the examples in the next note.
they are like the angels: The Greek word that the BSB translates as like the angels means “angel-like” or “equal to angels.”This word occurs only here in the NT. English versions that translate the meaning “angel-like” are NIV, GNT, NRSV, CEV, REB, NASB, NCV, NLT. Versions that translate the meaning “equal to angels” are: RSV, ESV, KJV, GW, and NJB. In this context the meanings are almost the same. The humans of the next age are like angels or equal to angels because they will not die. There are other ways in which they differ from angels. Be sure that your translation makes clear that the way they are like angels is that they do not die.

And since they are sons of the resurrection,

And since they are sons of the resurrection, they are sons of God: The phrase sons of God is used in a figurative sense here. In this context it indicates that the people who rise from death are God’s sons because they will live forever with him. Some ways to translate the connection between 20:36c and 20:36d are:
and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection (NASB)
they are children of God, because they share in the resurrection (REB)
In some languages it may be helpful to change the order of 20:36c and 20:36d. For example:
36dfor being children of the resurrection, 36cthey are the sons of God (JBP)
sons…sons: The Greek word that the BSB literally translates as sons refers to both men and women.
In 20:35 the Greek verbs are future forms, as in the BSB. In 20:36 the verbs are present forms. However, Jesus continued to talk about the future time of the resurrection. In some languages it may be more natural to use future verbs in both verses. For example:
35But in the future world no one who is worthy to rise from death will either marry 36or die. They will be like the angels and will be God’s children, because they have been raised to life. (CEV)
In some languages it may be helpful to change the order of the clauses in this verse. For example:
36cThey have already risen from death 36aand they cannot die again. 36bIn this way, they are like the angels. 36dThey are God’s children.

Jesus is using the term sons in this second case to mean people who share the qualities of something. In this case, Jesus is describing people who share the quality of God bringing them back to life after they have died. Alternate translation: [since God has brought them back to life]
