1 Yōannaʸs

Introduction

This First letter of Yohan had two purposes: 1.) encouraging the readers about God and his son Yeshua the messiah; and 2.) warning them that it’s important to not follow false or incorrect teachings that can destroy their unity with the master. These false teachers stated that Yeshua didn’t become a person like us. They also taught that salvation doesn’t include godly living and the love of others.

So in refuting those false doctrines, Yohan carefully explained that Yeshua the messiah came to this world as a real person, and he also explained that all who believe in Yeshua and love God, must also demonstrate their love to each other.

Main components of Yohan’s letter

Introduction 1:1-4

The darkness and the light 1:5-2:29

The children of God and the children of Satan 3:1-24

The truth and the lies 4:1-6

About love 4:7-21

Faith in Yeshua the messiah 5:1-21

1:1 The message that is life

13 1-3We are reporting to you and testifying about what existed from the beginning:[ref]Yeshua the messiah and son of God. We heard him, we saw him with our own eyes, and we touched him with our own hands. Concerning the message of life, we can also report and testify to you that that life was revealed[ref]he is the eternal life that was with the father and was revealed to us. We report what we’ve seen and what we’ve heard so that you all also can have fellowship with us, and our fellowship is with the father and with his son. 4We’re writing all this so that our joy may be extended to you also.

1What was from the_beginning, what we_have_heard, what we_have_seen with_the eyes of_us, what we_saw, and the hands of_us touched, concerning the message of_ the _life, 2and the life was_revealed, and we_have_seen, and we_are_testifying, and we_are_reporting to_you_all, the life the eternal, which was with the father, and was_revealed to_us, 3what we_have_seen, and we_have_heard, we_are_reporting also to_you_all, in_order_that also you_all may_be_having fellowship with us, and also the the our_ fellowship _is with the father, and with the son of_him, Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) chosen_one/messiah.
4And we are_writing these things, in_order_that the joy of_us may_be having_been_fulfilled.

1:5 We’re all sinners

5This is the message that we heard from him and which we are declaring to you all: God is light and there is no darkness in him—none at all. 6If we say that we and him are relating well together and yet we’re walking in the darkness, then we’re lying and not living the truth. 7But if we’re walking in the light, just like he walks in the light, then we’ll get along well with each other, and his son Yeshua’s blood is removing the consequences of all our sins.

8If we say that we don’t have any sin, then we’re just fooling ourselves and haven’t embraced the truth. 9But if we admit our sins, Yeshua is trustworthy and totally sinless, and he will forgive us for our sins and remove all of our guilt and consequences. 10If we say that we haven’t sinned, then we’re making a liar out of Yeshua and we haven’t internalised his message.

5And this is the message which we_have_heard from him and we_are_declaring to_you_all, that the god is light, and darkness is not in him, not_one.
6If we_may_say that we_are_having fellowship with him, and_yet we_may_be_walking in the darkness, we_are_lying and we_are_ not _practicing the truth.
7But if we_may_be_walking in the light as he is in the light, we_are_having fellowship with one_another, and the blood of_Yaʸsous the son of_him, is_cleansing us from all sin.
8If we_may_say that we_are_ not _having sin, we_are_deceiving ourselves and the truth is not.
in us.
9If we_may_be_confessing the sins of_us, he_is faithful and righteous, in_order_that he_may_forgive our sins to_us, and may_cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10If we_may_say that we_have_ not _sinned, we_are_making him a_liar, and the message of_him is not in us.

2:1 The messiah is our advocate

2I am writing to you all, my treasured new believers, so that you might avoid sinning. If anyone should sin, we have an advocate to help us relate to the father: Yeshua the sinless messiah, 2and it’s him who is the atonement for our sins—not just our sins, but also the sins of the entire world.

3We will know if we really know Yeshua if we obey his teachings. 4If someone says that they know Yeshua but don’t do what he taught, that person is a liar and hasn’t internalised the truth. 5However the person who obeys Yeshua’s teaching demonstrates that God’s love has truly been planted in them. We know that we are alive in Yeshua if 6we claim to live in him and then live our lives like he lived.

2Little_children of_me, I_am_writing these things to_you_all, in_order_that you_may_ not _sin.
And if anyone may_sin, we_are_having an_advocate with the father, Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) chosen_one/messiah the_righteous, 2and he is the_atonement for the sins of_us, and not for the our sins only, but also for all the world.
3And by this we_are_knowing that we_have_known him, if we_may_be_keeping the commands of_him.
4The one saying, that I_have_known him, and not keeping the commands of_him, is a_liar, and the truth is not in this one, 5but whoever wishfully may_be_keeping the message of_him, truly the love of_ the _god has_been_perfected in this one.
By this we_are_knowing that we_are in him:
6the one saying to_be_remaining in him, ought also himself to_be_walking as that one walked.

2:7 Love not hate to be in the light

7[ref]Dear friends, I’m not writing a new rule for you all, but reminding you of an old rule that you had from the beginning. This old rule is the message that you all heard. 8Then again I am writing a new rule to you—a rule which is true in Yeshua and in you all, because the darkness is already disappearing and the true light is already shining.

9Anyone who says they’re in the light but hates a fellow believer,[fn] is still in the darkness. 10It’s the person that loves their fellow believers who is living in the light and doesn’t offend anyone. 11But the person who hates a fellow believer is living and walking in the darkness and doesn’t know where they’re going because they’re blinded.

7Beloved, I_am_ not _writing a_ new _command to_you_all, but a_ old _command, which you_all_were_having from the_beginning.
The the old command is the message that you_all_heard.
8Again I_am_writing a_ new _command to_you_all, which is true in him and in you_all, because the darkness is_being_passed_away, and the the true light is_ already _shining.
9The one saying to_be in the light, and hating the brother of_him, is in the darkness until now.
10The one loving the brother of_him, is_remaining in the light, and offense is not in him 11But the one hating the brother of_him, is in the darkness, and is_walking in the darkness, and has_ not _known where he_is_going, because the darkness blinded the eyes of_him.

2:12 Don’t love the things of this world

12I’m writing to you new believers because your sins have been forgiven because of Yeshua authority. 13I’m writing to you fathers because you have known the messiah from the beginning.[ref] 14I wrote to you new believers because you have know the father. I wrote to you fathers because you have known the messiah from the beginning.[ref] I wrote to you young men because you are strong and God’s message lives in you and you have overcome the evil one.

15Don’t be loving the world nor the things in the world. The father’s love does not live in anyone who loves the world 16because everything that’s in the world, bodily desires and lusts and arrogant living, is not from the father but from the world. 17And the world will come to an end along with the desire for it, but the person obeying God’s desires will continue to live.

12I_am_writing to_you_all, little_children, because your sins have_been_forgiven to_you_all, because_of the name of_him.
13I_am_writing to_you_all, fathers, because you_all_have_known the one from the_beginning.
I_am_writing to_you_all, young_men, because you_all_have_overcome the evil one.
14I_wrote to_you_all, little_children, because you_all_have_known the father.
I_wrote to_you_all, fathers, because you_all_have_known the one from the_beginning.
I_wrote to_you_all, young_men, because you_all_are strong ones, and the message of_ the _god is_remaining in you_all, and you_all_have_overcome the evil one.
15Neither be_loving the world, nor the things in the world.
If anyone may_be_loving the world, the love of_the father is not in him.
16Because all which is in the world, the desire of_the flesh, and the desire of_the eyes, and the arrogance of_the living, is not from the father, but is from the world.
17And the world and the desire of_it is_being_passed_away, but the one doing the will of_ the _god is_remaining for the age.

2:18 Beware of ‘new’ teaching

18New believers, it’s now the last times and what you heard about the false messiah coming is now happening. Many false messiahs have already been around and that confirms that it’s now the last times. 19They came from our group, but they were never truly part of us because if they were, they would have stayed with us. But they left us so it would be revealed that they’re not part of us.

20But you all have received the spirit[fn] from the chosen messiah[fn] and you all know all about it.[fn] 21I didn’t write to you all because you don’t know the truth, but because you have known the truth and any falsehood is not part of it.

22Anyone who teaches that Yeshua is not the messiah is a liar. And anyone who disowns the father and the son is a false messiah. 23Anyone who disowns the son, doesn’t know the father either—only those who confess the son know the father

24What you all heard from the beginning, that’s what you should hold to. If the message that you heard from the beginning remains in you, then you also will remain in the son and in the father, 25and in that case, what he promised us is to live forever.

26I wrote these things to you all concerning those who would mislead you. 27But for you, the spirit that you received from Yeshua remains in you all and so you don’t need anyone else to teach you because his spirit teaches you about everything. The spirit teaches truth and not lies, and since you were taught by the spirit then you are remaining in Yeshua.

28So now you new believers, remain in him so that when he is revealed, we can have boldness and not be ashamed of him when he comes back. 29Because you know that he is sinless, you also know that anyone faithfully obeying his teaching has been reborn in him.

18Little_children, it_is the_last hour, and as you_all_heard that the_anti-messiah is_coming, even now many false_messiahs have_become, whence we_are_knowing that it_is the_last hour.
19They_came_out from us, but they_were not of us, because/for if they_were of us, they_ would _had_remained with us, but in_order_that they_may_be_revealed that they_are all not of us.
20And you_all are_having the_anointing from the holy one, and you_all_have_known all.
21I_ not _wrote to_you_all because you_all_have_ not _known the truth, but because you_all_have_known it, and because any falsehood is not of the truth.
22Who is the liar, except not/lest the one disowning that Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) is not the chosen_one/messiah?
This one is the anti-messiah, the one disowning the father and the son.
23Everyone which disowning the son, neither is_having the father.
The one confessing the son, also is_having the father.
24You_all, what you_all_heard from the_beginning, let_it_be_remaining in you_all.
If it_may_remain in you_all what you_all_heard from the_beginning, you_all also will_be_remaining in the son and in the father.
25And this is the promise which he promised to_us, the eternal the life.
26I_wrote these things to_you_all concerning the ones misleading you_all.
27And you_all, the anointing that you_all_received from him, is_remaining in you_all, and you_all_are_ not _having need that anyone may_be_teaching you_all, but as the anointing of_him is_teaching you_all concerning all things, and is true and is not a_falsehood, and as it_taught you_all, you_all_are_remaining in him.
28And now, little_children, be_remaining in him, in_order_that if he_may_be_revealed, we_may_have boldness, and we _may_ not _be_ashamed because_of him at the coming of_him.
29If you_all_may_have_known that he_is righteous, you_all_are_knowing that also everyone which practicing the righteousness has_been_born of him.

3:1 Living as God’s children

3[ref]Consider the amazing live that the father has given to us in order that we can be called God’s children, and indeed we are. 2Dear friends we are God’s children now, but it’s not yet revealed what we will become. We know that when Yeshua is revealed, we will be similar to him because then we’ll be seeing him exactly as he is. 3Everyone who trusts their future to him needs to purify themself just like he is pure.

4Everyone who regularly sins is demonstrating lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. 5[ref]You all know that Yeshua was revealed in order to take away sins, and there’s no sin in him. 6Everyone who remains in him doesn’t sin—everyone who keeps sinning has neither really seen Yeshua nor known him.

7So new believers, don’t let anyone deceive you: the person faithfully obeying Yeshua’s teaching will be declared not guilty just as he is not guilty. 8Anyone who regularly sins belongs to the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning.

9Everyone who’s been reborn in God, doesn’t regularly sin because God’s seed of life remains in them and that person isn’t able to sin because they have been reborn in God. 10You can distinguish God’s children and the devil’s children like this: everyone who doesn’t faithfully obey Yeshua’s teaching or doesn’t love their fellow believers, that person doesn’t belong to God.

3See what_kind_of love the father has_given to_us, in_order_that we_may_be_called children of_god, and we_are.
Because_of this, the world is_ not _knowing us, because it_ not _knew him.
2Beloved, now we_are children of_god, and was_ not_yet _revealed what we_will_be.
We_have_known that if he_may_be_revealed, we_will_be similar to_him, because we_will_be_seeing him as he_is.
3And everyone which having the this hope in him, is_purifying himself, as that one is pure.
4Everyone which practicing the sin, is_ also _practicing the lawlessness, and the sin is the lawlessness.
5And you_all_have_known that that one was_revealed, in_order_that he_may_take_away the sins, and sin is not in him.
6Everyone which remaining in him is_ not _sinning, everyone which sinning has_ neither _seen him, nor has_known him.
7Little_children, let_ no_one _be_deceiving you_all, the one practicing the righteousness, is righteous, as that one is righteous.
8The one practicing the sin, is of the devil, because the devil is_sinning from the_beginning.
The son of_ the _god was_revealed for this, in_order_that he_may_destroy the works of_the devil.
9Everyone which having_been_born of the god, is_ not _practicing sin, because the_seed of_him is_remaining in him, and he_is_ not _able to_be_sinning, because he_has_been_born of the god.
10The children of_ the _god, and the children of_the devil is manifest in this:
everyone which not practicing righteousness, and the one not loving the brother of_him, is not of the god.

3:11 Demonstrate your love for each other

11[ref]Yes, this is the message that you all heard from the beginning: to be loving each other—12not living like Cain who belonged to the evil one and went on to murder his brother.[ref] And why did he kill him? Because his own actions were evil, but his brother Abel followed God’s instructions.

13And friends, don’t be surprised if the world hates you. 14[ref]We know that we have transferred from death to life because we are loving our fellow believers. Anyone who doesn’t love others is stuck in death. 15Everyone who hates another person is a murderer, and you all know that murderers don’t have eternal life in them. 16We know about real love because we saw that Yeshua gave up his life for us, and we should give up our lives for our fellow believers. 17But anyone who’s enjoying being alive and notices that a fellow believer is in need yet shuts that other believer’s needs out of their conscience, how can God’s love be living in that person? 18So you new believers, don’t just proclaim that you’re loving people, but actually demonstrate it in actions and in fact. 19That’s how we’ll know that the truth really is in us.

At the same time, we need to tell ourselves 20that if we are feeling condemned, God is greater than our feelings and he knows everything. 21Then dear friends, if we’re not feeling condemned, we have confidence in God 22and confidence that whatever we are requesting from him, we will receive it because we are following his instructions and doing the things that please him. 23[ref]And this is his command: We need to believe in the authority of his son, Yeshua the messiah, and we should love each other as per the command that Yeshua gave to us. 24Anyone who follows his commands is living in him, and he is living in them and we have confirmation that he is living in us, because we have the spirit that he gave to us.

11Because this is the message that you_all_heard from the_beginning, that we_may_be_loving one_another, 12not as Kain/(Qayin) of the evil one was, and slayed the brother of_him.
And for_ what _reason_of he_slayed him?
Because the works of_him was evil, but the ones of_the brother of_him, righteous.
13Not be_marvelling, brothers, if the world is_hating you_all.
14We have_known that we_have_departed from the death to the life, because we_are_loving our brothers.
The one not loving, is_remaining in the death.
15Everyone which hating the brother of_him, is a_murderer, and you_all_have_known that any murderer is_ not _having eternal life remaining in himself.
16By this we_have_known the love, because that one laid the life of_him for us, and we ought to_lay our lives for our brothers.
17But whoever wishfully may_be_having the living of_the world, and may_be_observing the brother of_him having need, and may_shut the heart of_him from him, how is_ The love - of_god _remaining in him?
18Little_children, not may_we_be_loving in_message, nor in_the tongue, but in work and in_truth.
19By this we_will_be_knowing that we_are of the truth, and we_will_be_persuading the hearts of_us before him, 20that if the heart of_us may_be_condemning, that the god is greater than the heart of_us, and he_is_knowing all things.
21Beloved, if our heart may_ not _be_condemning, we_are_having confidence toward the god, 22and whatever if we_may_be_requesting, we_are_receiving from him, because we_are_keeping the commands of_him, and we_are_practicing the pleasing things before him.
23And this is the command of_him, that we_may_be_believe in_the name of_the son of_him, Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) chosen_one/messiah, and we_may_be_loving one_another, as he_gave the_command to_us.
24And the one keeping the commands of_him, is_remaining in him, and he in him.
And by this we_are_knowing that he_is_remaining in us, by the spirit whom he_gave to_us.

4:1 True and false spirits

4Dear friends, don’t trust every spirit, but test them to determine whether or not it’s from God, because many false prophets go around the world. 2You all can find out whether or not a spirit is from God: If the spirit confesses that Yeshua the messiah has come as a person, then it’s from God 3but if the spirit won’t confess Yeshua, then it’s not from God but rather it’s the spirit of the false messiah, whom you’ve heard is coming, and is now already in the world.

4You new believers are in God and you have defeated the false prophets, because the one in you is more powerful than the one in the world. 5They belong to the world hence they are speaking from the world, and the world is listening to them. 6However we belong to God, and anyone who knows God listens to us, but anyone who doesn’t belong to God can’t accept what we’re saying. That’s how we can distinguish the spirit of truth from deceptive spirits.

4Beloved, not be_believing in_every spirit, but be_approving the spirits, whether it_is of the god, because many false_prophets have_come_out into the world.
2By this you_all_are_knowing the spirit of_ the _god:
every spirit that is_confessing Yaʸsous chosen_one/messiah having_come in the_flesh, is of the god, 3and every spirit that is_ not _confessing the Yaʸsous, is not of the god.
And this is the spirit of_the anti-messiah, which you_all_have_heard that it_is_coming, and now is already in the world.
4You_all are of the god, little_children, and you_all_have_overcome them, because greater is the one in you_all, than the one in the world.
5They are of the world, because_of this they_are_speaking from the world, and the world is_hearing from_them.
6We are of the god.
The one knowing the god, is_hearing from_us, whoever is not of the god, is_ not _hearing from_us.
By this we_are_knowing the spirit of_ the _truth and the spirit of_ the _deception.

4:7 Loving God means loving others

7Dear friends, we need to be loving each other, because love is from God and everyone who truly loves has been reborn into God and knows God. 8Those who don’t love, don’t love God because God is love. 9God’s love was revealed to us when he sent his only son to be born into the world so that we can live through him. 10So this is real love, not us loving God, but God loving us and sending his son to be the sacrifice to clear us of the sentence from our sins.

11Dear friends, if God loves us like that, we ought to be loving each other. 12[ref]No one has ever seen God, but when we are loving each other then God is living in us, and his love is being perfected in us.

13We can know that we are living in him and him in us because he has given to us from his spirit. 14And we have seen and are testifying that the father sent the son—the saviour of the world. 15Anyone who confesses that Yeshua is God’s son, God lives in that person and they live in God. 16We have known and experienced the love that God has in us.

God is love, and anyone who lives in love, lives in God, and God lives in them. 17This is how love will be perfected in us so that we can live with confidence about the coming judgement day: we live like Yeshua in this world. 18There’s no fear in love, but rather perfect love drives away fear, because our fear is that of being punished but the one fearing has not been perfected in love.

19We love others because he loved us first. 20Anyone who says that they are loving God but hates a fellow believer, that person is liar because if someone can’t love a fellow believer that they’ve seen, they can’t love God who they’ve never seen. 21So we have this command from Yeshua that anyone who loves God must also love their fellow believers.

7Beloved, we_may_be_loving one_another, because the love is from the god, and everyone which loving has_been_born from the god, and is_knowing the god.
8The one not loving, not knew the god, because the god is love.
9The love of_ the _god was_revealed among us in this, that the god has_sent_out the son of_him, the only_begotten, into the world in_order_that we_may_live through him.
10In this is the love, not that we have_loved the god, but that he loved us, and sent_out the son of_him, a_atonement for the sins of_us.
11Beloved, if the god loved us thus, we also ought to_be_loving one_another.
12No_one has_ ever _seen god, if we_may_be_loving one_another, the god is_remaining in us, and the love of_him is having_been_perfected in us.
13By this we_are_knowing, that we_are_remaining in him, and he in us, because he_has_given to_us from the spirit of_him.
14And we have_seen and are_testifying that the father has_sent_out the son, saviour of_the world.
15Whoever wishfully may_confess that Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) is the son of_ the _god, the god is_remaining in him, and he in the god.
16And we have_known and have_believed the love that god is_having the in us.
The god is love, and the one remaining in the love, is_remaining in the god, and the god is_remaining in him.
17In this the love has_been_perfected with us, in_order_that we_may_be_having confidence in the day of_ the _judgment, because as that one is, we also are in the this world.
18Fear is not in the love, but the perfect love is_throwing out the fear, because the fear is_having punishment, and the one fearing, has_ not _been_perfected in the love.
19We are_loving, because he first loved us.
20If anyone may_say, that I_am_loving the god, and may_be_hating the brother of_him, is a_liar, because/for the one not loving the brother of_him, whom he_has_seen, is_ not _able to_be_loving the god, whom he_has_ not _seen.
21And we_are_having this the command from him, that the one loving the god, may_ also _be_loving the brother of_him.

5:1 Faith and love overcome the world

5Everyone who believes that Yeshua is the messiah has been reborn in God, and everyone who loves the father who gave birth to us, also loves the son that he gave birth to. 2We can know when we love God’s children: whenever we love God and obey his commands, 3because the definition of loving God[ref] is obeying his commands and his commands are not a big strain on us 4because everyone who’s been reborn in God is overcoming the world. 5So who can overcome the world? Only the person who believes that Yeshua is God’s son.

5Everyone which believing that Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) is the chosen_one/messiah, has_been_born of the god, and everyone which loving the one having_bore  him, is_loving also the one having_been_born from him.
2By this we_are_knowing that we_are_loving the children of_ the _god:
whenever we_are_loving the god, and we_may_be_keeping the commands of_him.
3For/Because this is the love of_ the _god, that we_may_be_keeping the commands of_him, and the commands of_him are not heavy, 4because everything which having_been_born of the god, is_overcoming the world.
And this is the victory which having_overcame the world, the faith of_us.
5And who is the one overcoming the world, except not/lest the one believing that Yaʸsous is the son of_ the _god?

5:6 God’s testimony about Yeshua

6Yeshua the messiah is the one who was born by water and blood and spirit—not by water only,[ref] but by water and by blood 7because there are three that testify: 8the spirit, the water, and the blood, and these three come together into one. 9If we accept testimonies from people, then God’s testimony is better, because God’s testimony is about his son. 10Any person that believes that Yeshua is God’s son has internalised God’s testimony, but anyone who doesn’t believe in God calls him a liar because they have not believed the testimony of God himself about his son. 11And this is the testimony: that God gave eternal life to us[ref] and this life is in his son. 12Anyone who has the son has life, but anyone who doesn’t have the God’s son, doesn’t have eternal life.

6This is the one having_come by water and blood, Yaʸsous chosen_one/messiah, not by the water only, but by the water and by the blood.
And the spirit is which testifying, because the spirit is the truth.
7Because the ones testifying are three:
8the spirit, and the water, and the blood, and the three are_there in the one.
9If we_are_receiving the testimony the of_humans, the testimony of_ the _god is greater, because this is the testimony of_ the _god, that he_has_testified concerning the son of_him.
10The one believing in the son of_ the _god, is_having the testimony in himself, the one not believing the in_god, has_made him a_liar, because he_has_ not _believed in the testimony that the god has_testified concerning the son of_him.
11And this is the testimony:
that the god gave eternal life to_us, and this the life is in the son of_him.
12The one having the son, is_having the life, the one not having the son of_ the _god, is_ not _having the life.

5:13 Living without ending

13I wrote these things to you so that you all could know that you have eternal life, that is the ones believed in the name and authority of God’s son. 14And so we have confidence in God that if we request anything according to his will, he hears us 15whatever we’re requesting, and we know that we’ll receive what we requested.

16If anyone sees a fellow believer committing a forgivable sin, then that person should ask God on their behalf and God will give life to that fellow believer. (But there is a sin that always results in death and I’m not suggesting that we should ask in that case.) 17All disobedience is sin, but there are sins that don’t necessarily lead to death.

18We know that everyone who’s been reborn into God doesn’t keep sinning, but the messiah who was born from God watches over them and so the evil one can’t touch them.

19We know that we belong to God and that the whole word is under the control of the evil one.

20We know that God’s son has come and helped our minds so that we could know the true one, and we are in the true one and also in his son, Yeshua the messiah—the true God and eternal life itself.

21You new believers, don’t honour idols.

2:9 Literally ‘our brothers’. In this letter that term could refer to ‘siblings’, ‘fellow believers’, or ‘fellow citizens’ (or Yohan could be alternating between two or three of them in his mind as he wrote). After considering all the uses of the term in chapters 2–5, we have taken ‘fellow believers’ as being more likely, i.e., the context would often seem to be focussing on believers (even though most of us would want to apply 3:16–17 to also include ‘fellow citizens’).

2:20 anointing: It’s not really clear here what Yohan is referring to that they have received: God’s favour? a skill or ability? a blessing? the Holy Spirit? But v27 below seems to be talking about God’s holy spirit.

2:20 holy (one): Yohan seems to be referring to Yeshua here.

2:20 You all know all: also unclear what Yohan means.

13I_wrote these things to_you_all, in_order_that you_all_may_have_known that you_all_are_having eternal, life to_the ones believing in the name of_the son of_ the _god.
14and this is the confidence that we_are_having toward him:
that if we_may_be_requesting anything according_to the will of_him, he_is_hearing from_us.
15And if we_have_known that he_is_hearing from_us, whatever wishfully we_may_be_requesting, we_have_known that we_are_having the requests that we_have_requested from him.
16If anyone may_see the brother of_him sinning a_sin not to death, he_will_be_requesting and he_will_be_giving life to_him, to_the ones sinning not to death.
There_is a_sin to death, I_am_ not _saying that he_may_ask concerning that sin.
17All unrighteousness is sin, and there_is a_sin not to death.
18We_have_known that everyone which having_been_born of the god is_ not _sinning, but the one having_been_born of the god is_keeping him and the evil one is_ not _touching against_him.
19We_have_known that we_are of the god, and the whole world is_lying in the evil one.
20And we_have_known that the son of_ the _god is_coming, and has_given to_us a_mind, in_order_that we_are_knowing the true one, and we_are in the true one, in the son of_him, Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) chosen_one/messiah.
This one is the true god and eternal life.
21Little_children, keep yourselves from the idols.
