TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:2-10 After thanking God for the faith, love, and hope of the Thessalonian believers (1:2-3), Paul recalls how the Good News was proclaimed to them (1:4-5) and how they accepted its message (1:6-10). Paul returns to these themes in 2:1-12 and 2:13-16.

SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:2–10: Paul thanked God for the way that the Thessalonians had believed the gospel and continued to obey God

Paragraph 1:4–10

Paul knew that the Thessalonians to whom he wrote were people whom God had chosen to be his own people. He knew this because he saw how they had responded when he and his companions preached the gospel to them. The Thessalonians not only observed that Paul and his companions believed what they preached. They also saw that the Holy Spirit confirmed that what they said was true. The result was that some of the Thessalonians believed in Jesus, even though fellow citizens persecuted them. Other believers in the regions of Macedonia and Achaia heard about how the Thessalonians had believed the gospel. Therefore, the Thessalonians had become an example to many people in different places. The result was that wherever Paul and his companions went to preach, the people there had already heard how the Thessalonians had become believers in Christ.

1:7

As a result, you have become an example to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.

As a result, you have become an example: The Thessalonians believers imitated how Paul and the Lord Jesus behaved (1:6a). The result was that they were an example for other believers to follow.

in Macedonia and Achaia: Thessalonica was in the province or region of Macedonia, the northern part of Greece. Be careful that your translation does not cause people to think that Thessalonica was not in Macedonia. If this is a problem, you could say “in the other parts of Macedonia” rather than in Macedonia. Achaia was the southern part of Greece. See the Introduction for more details about the geographical and political situation.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

ὥστε

so_as

Here, the phrase so that introduces a result from how the Thessalonians became imitators of Paul, his fellow workers, and the Lord (see [1:6](../01/06.md)). If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces a result. Alternate translation: [and as a result] or [and so]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

γενέσθαι ὑμᾶς τύπους πᾶσιν τοῖς πιστεύουσιν ἐν τῇ Μακεδονίᾳ καὶ ἐν τῇ Ἀχαΐᾳ

˓to˒_become you_all examples ˱to˲_all the_‹ones› believing in ¬the Macedonia (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὥστε γενέσθαι ὑμᾶς τύπους πᾶσιν τοῖς πιστεύουσιν ἐν τῇ Μακεδονίᾳ καί ἐν τῇ Ἀχαΐᾳ)

If your language would not use the abstract noun examples, you could express the idea in another way. Alternate translation: [you showed all the ones believing in Macedonia and in Achaia how to behave] or [all the ones believing in Macedonia and Achaia started to copy how you live]

Note 3 topic: translate-names

ἐν τῇ Μακεδονίᾳ καὶ ἐν τῇ Ἀχαΐᾳ

in ¬the Macedonia in ¬the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὥστε γενέσθαι ὑμᾶς τύπους πᾶσιν τοῖς πιστεύουσιν ἐν τῇ Μακεδονίᾳ καί ἐν τῇ Ἀχαΐᾳ)

The word Achaia is the name of a Roman province in the southern part of modern-day Greece. The word Macedonia is the same of a Roman province in the northern part of modern-day Greece. If it would be helpful in your language, you could clarify that these words are names of provinces or regions. Alternate translation: [in the regions of Macedonia and Achaia]
