TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:6 Because they accepted the Good News, the Thessalonians experienced severe suffering from their contemporaries (2:14; 3:3-4). Yet as they followed the model of the apostles and of the Lord himself (Matt 5:11-12; Rom 8:17; 12:12; Phil 2:17), they received joy from the Holy Spirit (1 Pet 4:13-14).

SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:2–10: Paul thanked God for the way that the Thessalonians had believed the gospel and continued to obey God

Paragraph 1:4–10

Paul knew that the Thessalonians to whom he wrote were people whom God had chosen to be his own people. He knew this because he saw how they had responded when he and his companions preached the gospel to them. The Thessalonians not only observed that Paul and his companions believed what they preached. They also saw that the Holy Spirit confirmed that what they said was true. The result was that some of the Thessalonians believed in Jesus, even though fellow citizens persecuted them. Other believers in the regions of Macedonia and Achaia heard about how the Thessalonians had believed the gospel. Therefore, the Thessalonians had become an example to many people in different places. The result was that wherever Paul and his companions went to preach, the people there had already heard how the Thessalonians had become believers in Christ.

1:6a

And you became imitators of us and of the Lord

And you became imitators of us and of the Lord: Like 1:5, this sentence connects to 1:4. Paul and his companions knew that God had chosen the Thessalonians not only because the gospel had come to them with power (1:5) but also because they had accepted it. Also, they became imitators of Paul and the Lord. They imitated the way that they had seen Paul behave. They also acted in the way that he had taught them that Jesus had acted. This can also be expressed:

You took us and the Lord as your model (NJB)

you followed our example and the example of the Lord (CEV)

You were like us and the Lord in the way you behaved. (UBS, page 10)

1:6b

when you welcomed the message with the joy of the Holy Spirit,

when you welcomed the message with the joy of the Holy Spirit: Normally people are sad when they suffer. However, the Holy Spirit enabled the Thessalonians to be joyful even while they suffered. See Galatians 5:22; Romans 5:3, 5:5.

The commentators do not agree how the phrase you welcomed the message relates to the phrase in 1:6a “you became imitators of us and of the Lord.” There are two possibilities:

  1. The connection is one of manner, that is, the Thessalonians imitated Paul and Jesus. Although people were persecuting them, they joyfully accepted the message. (NLT)

  2. The connection is a time connection, that is, the Thessalonians began to imitate Paul and Jesus when/after they had joyfully accepted the message. Therefore, the Thessalonians imitated the whole way that Paul and Jesus behaved, not just the way that they suffered. (BSB, NET)

Most English versions are ambiguous (see the NASB). It is recommended that you follow the first option (1), as it has the best commentary support. The Thessalonians joyfully believed the gospel and they continued to be joyful even while they suffered. This is how they became like Paul and the Lord Jesus Christ.

the message: Paul used the Greek noun logos here, which means “message” or “word.” He was specifically referring to the message about Jesus that he had preached to them (1:5a). This word could be translated here as “gospel” (as in 1:5a) or “the message about Jesus.” The important thing is to make clear that Paul was referring to the same message here and in 1:5a.

1:6c

in spite of your great suffering.

in spite of your great suffering: People were persecuting the believers severely because they believed in Christ and in what he had taught. However, although this happened, other Thessalonians became believers.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

ὑμεῖς & ἐγενήθητε

you_all & ˓were˒_become

For emphasis, Paul is stating the pronoun you, which is already implied in the verb became. If your language can state implied pronouns explicitly for emphasis, you may want to use that construction in your translation. Other languages may have other ways of bringing out this emphasis. The ULT does so by using the intensive pronoun yourselves. Alternate translation: [it is you who became]

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-time-simultaneous

δεξάμενοι

˓having˒_received

Here, the phrase having received could introduce: (1) the way in which the Thessalonians became imitators. Alternate translation: [that is, you received] (2) when the Thessalonians became imitators. Alternate translation: [which you did when you received]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

τὸν λόγον

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὑμεῖς μιμηταί ἡμῶν ἐγενήθητε καί τοῦ Κυρίου δεξάμενοι τόν λόγον ἐν θλίψει πολλῇ μετά χαρᾶς Πνεύματος Ἁγίου)

Here, the word represents a message that is made up of words, specifically the gospel. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea in another way. Alternate translation: [the gospel message] or [the words of the gospel]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἐν θλίψει πολλῇ

in tribulation much

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of affliction, you could express the idea in another way. Alternate translation: [while being afflicted] or [while people made you suffer]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

μετὰ χαρᾶς Πνεύματος Ἁγίου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὑμεῖς μιμηταί ἡμῶν ἐγενήθητε καί τοῦ Κυρίου δεξάμενοι τόν λόγον ἐν θλίψει πολλῇ μετά χαρᾶς Πνεύματος Ἁγίου)

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of joy, you could express the idea in another way. Alternate translation: [rejoicing because of the Holy Spirit]

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

μετὰ χαρᾶς Πνεύματος Ἁγίου

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Καί ὑμεῖς μιμηταί ἡμῶν ἐγενήθητε καί τοῦ Κυρίου δεξάμενοι τόν λόγον ἐν θλίψει πολλῇ μετά χαρᾶς Πνεύματος Ἁγίου)

Here, Paul is using the possessive form to describe joy that is given by the Holy Spirit. If this is not clear in your language, you could express the idea in another way. Alternate translation: [with joy from the Holy Spirit] or [with joy given by the Holy Spirit]
