11:17 Conduct when celebrating the master’s dinner
17 But I’m not complimenting you all in giving the following instructions, because your gatherings have been doing more harm than good. 18 Firstly, I hear that when you gather together in the assembly, there are divisions among you all, and I partly believe it 19 because there must be differences among you to show who out of all of you are approved. 20 So then, when you gather together in one place, it’s not to celebrate by eating the master’s dinner 21 because during the meal, everyone grabs their own food without considering others. So some people remain hungry while others have too much to drink. 22 For eating and drinking, don’t you all have your own houses to do that in? Why are you showing contempt for God’s assembly and humiliating those left with nothing? What should I say about that? Should I praise you for that? No, I can’t!
23 I’ve already passed on to all of you everything that I received from the master: that on the night when he was betrayed, he took a bread roll 24 and after giving thanks, he broke off a piece and said, “This represents my body which will be broken for your sakes. Keep doing this in memory of me.” 25 Similarly, after the dinner he took the cup and said, “This cup represents the new agreement which will be sealed by my blood. As often as you all celebrate, drink it in memory of me.”[ref] 26 Because as often as you all celebrate by eating bread and drinking from the cup, you’ll continue to announce the master’s death until he returns.
27 Therefore, anyone who eats that bread or drinks from the master’s cup in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the master. 28 So everyone person must first examine themself as part of eating that bread and drinking from that cup, 29 because anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body,[fn] eats and drinks judgement onto themself. 30 Because of that, many among you are weak and sick, and many have passed away, 31 but if we were examining ourselves, we wouldn’t be judged. 32 However, when we’re judged by the master, we’re being disciplined so that we won’t be condemned along with the unbelievers.
33 So brothers and sisters, when you come together to celebrate this, wait for each other. 34 If anyone’s hungry, they should eat at home beforehand, so that your meetings won’t lead to judgement. I’ll give instructions about other matters when I get there.
11:29 Discern/distinguish/recognise their own body? The master’s body? The whole group as a body? Unfortunately, we can’t ask Paul exactly what he meant here.
26:26 Yeshua shares the bread and the wine
26 Then during the meal, Yeshua took some bread and blessed it, then he broke it into pieces and gave it to his apprentices, saying, “Take this and eat it—it’s my body.”
27 Then he took a cup of wine and after giving thanks, he shared it with them saying, “Everyone drink some, 28 [ref]because this is my blood of the agreement which is about to be poured out for the forgiveness of the sins of many people. 29 I can assure you all that I certainly won’t drink this passover wine again until I’m able to drink it together with you all in my father’s kingdom.”
22 As the carried on eating, he took a bread roll, blessed God, broke the roll apart and gave a piece to them, saying, “Take this bread—it’s my body.”
23 Then he picked up a cup, gave thanks to God, and passed it around so they could each drink from it, 24 [ref]saying, “This is the blood of my contract that will be poured out for many people. 25 I can assure you that I won’t drink anything made from grapes until I drink new juice in God’s kingdom.”
22:14 The cups and the bread at dinner
14 When it was time to eat, Yeshua and his apprentices sat down together 15 and he told them, “I’ve been really looking forward to eating this passover dinner with you all before my time of suffering begins, 16 because I’m telling you that I certainly won’t eat it again until it’s fulfilled in God’s kingdom.”
17 Then when the wine cup was passed to him, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and share it among yourselves, 18 because I’m telling you that after this, I won’t drink the product of the vines again until God’s kingdom comes.
19 Then picking up some bread and giving thanks, he broke the bread apart and gave it to them saying, “This is my body which is being given for you all. Do this when you remember me.” 20 [ref]Similarly with the cup of wine that comes after they’ve eaten, he said, “This cup is the new agreement in my blood which will be poured out for you all.
