Section 11:17–34: Eat the Lord’s Supper in the proper way

In this section Paul discussed some problems with how the believers in Corinth ate the Lord’s Supper. Some people started eating and did not wait for others to arrive. Some people ate too much while others had little or nothing.

Christians should eat the Lord’s Supper in order to remember the Lord Jesus. They should repent from sin before eating and drinking, and they should wait for everyone to arrive before beginning the Supper. If anyone is hungry, they should eat at home so that they do not come under judgment.

The celebration of the Lord’s Supper is also described in Matthew 26:26–28, Mark 14:22–24 and Luke 22:17–20.

In this paragraph Paul taught believers to examine themselves before eating the Lord’s Supper, so that God will not judge them.

That is why many among you are weak and sick,

This is the reason many of you^(plur) are weak or sick
This is why many of you are feeble and many are ill,

That is why many among you are weak and sick: The phrase That is why refers back to the previous verse. What Paul said in the previous verse is the reason for the many sicknesses in the Corinthian church.

weak and sick: The Greek words that the BSB translates as weak and sick are similar in meaning. One who is weak is feeble or without strength, whereas one who is sick is ill with some disease.

and a number of you have fallen asleep.

and some of you^(plur) have died.

and a number of you have fallen asleep: The phrase a number of you have fallen asleep means “some of you have died.” Paul did not say how many, but the phrase a number implies at least more than two. Several of the believers in Corinth died because they ate the Lord’s Supper in a wrong way.

Here, weak refers in general to lack of physical strength without specifying a cause. On the other hand, sick refers specifically to lack of strength caused by sickness or illness. If your language has words that fit with these distinctions, you could use them here. If your language does not have words that fit with these distinctions, you can use one general word for weakness or illness. Alternate translation: [are weak] or [are sick]
