11:17-34 Paul addresses problems in the way the Corinthians were relating to each other and to the Lord while taking the Lord’s Supper.
In this section Paul discussed some problems with how the believers in Corinth ate the Lord’s Supper. Some people started eating and did not wait for others to arrive. Some people ate too much while others had little or nothing.
Christians should eat the Lord’s Supper in order to remember the Lord Jesus. They should repent from sin before eating and drinking, and they should wait for everyone to arrive before beginning the Supper. If anyone is hungry, they should eat at home so that they do not come under judgment.
The celebration of the Lord’s Supper is also described in Matthew 26:26–28, Mark 14:22–24 and Luke 22:17–20.
Here are some other possible section headings:
How to observe/celebrate the Lord’s Supper
Instructions about the Lord’s Supper
The Lord’s Supper should be honored
In this paragraph Paul scolded the Corinthians for divisions in the church, and for their greed while eating the Lord’s Supper.
Now then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat.
When you(plur) meet together, what you eat is not the Lord’s Supper,
When you eat the meal in honor of the Lord together, your behavior is not fitting for people who eat this meal,
When you eat together to remember the death of the Lord, you are not thinking about him,
Now then: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as Now then introduces a conclusion to Paul’s argument. There were divisions among the people, and so the meal they ate could not properly be called the Lord’s Supper. Many English versions do not translate this conjunction. Introduce this verse in a natural way in your language.
Here are some ways to translate the Greek conjunction:
So then (NIV11)
Now (NET)
when you come together: The phrase when you come together refers to times when the believers met together to worship as a church. It appears that at those times they celebrated the Lord’s Supper and also ate a meal together.
it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat: The people who gathered thought they were eating the Lord’s Supper. However, the way they behaved made this impossible. The way they were eating was different from what the Lord had planned, and the meal could not be considered to be the Lord’s Supper.
Here are some other ways to translate this clause:
your behavior is not fitting for people who eat the Lord's Supper
you are not really thinking about the Lord
it is as if you are not remembering the Lord at all
the Lord’s Supper: The phrase the Lord’s Supper refers to Holy Communion or the Eucharist. The word Lord’s refers to Jesus Christ.
Here are some other ways to translate this phrase:
the meal of the Lord Jesus
the meal that is in honor of the Lord Jesus
when you eat together to remember the death of the Lord Jesus
Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result
οὖν
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: συνερχομένων Οὖν ὑμῶν ἐπί τό αὐτό οὐκ ἐστίν Κυριακόν δεῖπνον φαγεῖν)
Here, So then introduces an inference or result from the “divisions” and “factions” mentioned in [11:18–19](../11/18.md). If it would be helpful in your language, you could translate So then to more clearly state what it draws an inference from. Alternate translation: [So then, since you have factions,]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet
συνερχομένων & ὑμῶν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ
coming_together & ˱of˲_you_all (Some words not found in SR-GNT: συνερχομένων Οὖν ὑμῶν ἐπί τό αὐτό οὐκ ἐστίν Κυριακόν δεῖπνον φαγεῖν)
Here Paul uses both come together and in one place to emphasize the physical unity of the Corinthians when they meet. He does this in order to contrast this physical unity with the disunity that their eating practices show. If your language does not use two similar phrases for emphasis like Paul does, then you can use just one phrase and indicate the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [when you are all together]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
οὐκ ἔστιν Κυριακὸν δεῖπνον φαγεῖν
not (Some words not found in SR-GNT: συνερχομένων Οὖν ὑμῶν ἐπί τό αὐτό οὐκ ἐστίν Κυριακόν δεῖπνον φαγεῖν)
Here Paul does not explicitly state that the Corinthians come together in order to eat the Lord’s Supper. However, he and the Corinthians would have understood this when he speaks about “coming together.” Paul’s point is that they think they are eating the Lord’s Supper, but what they are doing does not actually count as the Lord’s Supper. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state explicitly that the idea behind it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper is that the Corinthians thought that they were eating the Lord’s Supper, but Paul thinks that they are not. Alternate translation: [it is not the Lord’s Supper that you are eating] or [you think that you are eating the Lord’s Supper, but you are not]
