Section 7:11–17: Jesus caused a widow’s son to live again

In this section Jesus showed his compassion for a widow and her dead son by causing him to live again. This is the first time in the book of Luke that Jesus caused a dead person to live again. People were so excited that they spread the good news throughout the whole area.

It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:

When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her

¶ When the Master saw the woman, he felt very sorry/sad for her.

the Lord: There is a textual issue here. Some Greek manuscripts say “the Lord.” Other manuscripts say “Jesus.” The KJV and the NET follow the manuscripts that say “Jesus.” It is recommended that you follow the manuscripts that say “the Lord,” as the majority of English versions do, including the BSB. However, if the national language version in your area has the same reading as the KJV and NET here, you may want to include a footnote in your translation. For example: Some Greek manuscripts read “Jesus.” The Greek word that the BSB translates as Lord means “master” or “one who has authority over others.” In this context the Lord is a title for Jesus. Some other ways to translate this are:

This is the first time that Luke referred to Jesus as Lord in this context. In some languages it may be necessary to make clear that the word Lord here refers to Jesus. For example:

In other languages it may be necessary to indicate whose Lord is referred to. If that is true in your language, if you use the pronoun “our,” it should be the inclusive form, if your language uses that form. For example:

He had compassion on her: The Greek phrase that the BSB translates as He had compassion on her means “he felt compassion for her.” It implies that Jesus felt pity for her and that he wanted to help her. You may have an idiom for this in your language. Some ways to translate it are:

his heart went out to her (NIV)

he felt sorry for her (NJB)

he felt sad/concerned for her

his heart was filled with pity for her (GNT)

and said, “Do not weep.”

He said, “Do not cry any more.”
and he told her not to weep.

Do not weep: Here Jesus told the woman not to weep because he did not want her to feel distressed anymore. He knew that he was about to cause her son to live again. The woman was already weeping when Jesus said this. So in some languages it may be natural to translate this as:

Don’t weep any longer

Stop crying

Be sure that your translation of Do not weep expresses compassion.
