At the time when the events in this section happened, John the Baptizer was in prison (3:20). He sent two of his disciples to Jesus to ask Jesus whether he was the Messiah. He referred to the Messiah as “the coming one” whom he and the people were expecting. Jesus’ answer implied that he was the Messiah.
After John’s messengers had left, Jesus talked about what a great man John was. But he also implied that the coming kingdom would be greater. It would be so great that people who would experience it and its benefits would have even greater privileges and blessings than John had. Finally, Jesus showed that the Jewish religious leaders rejected the plan of God, since they rejected both John and Jesus.
It is good to translate this section before you decide on a heading for it. Some other possible headings for this section are:
Jesus responds to the messengers of John the Baptizer and speaks about John to the crowd
Jesus speaks to the people about John the Baptizer
Jesus teaches about John the Baptizer
There is a parallel passage for this section in Matthew 11:3–19.
This verse expresses a contrast with 7:29. In contrast to the ordinary people and tax collectors, who accepted John’s baptism, the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God’s plan. God planned that they would repent and be ready to receive the Christ/Messiah and be part of his kingdom. But they refused to repent and let John baptize them. Express the contrast in a natural way in your language.

(GW) Pharisees: The Pharisees were a Jewish religious group or party. It was very important to them to obey all of the Jewish religious laws very carefully and in detail. Here are some ways to translate this word:
Transliterate the word Pharisees according to the sounds of your language and indicate that it refers to people. For example:

Parise adherents
Transliterate the word Pharisees and indicate that it refers to a group of people with certain beliefs. For example:
people belonging to the Farise religious sect/group

(GW) experts in Moses’ Teachings: The experts in Moses’ Teachings were religious scholars who studied, taught, and interpreted the Jewish law, especially the law of Moses. The BSB translates this as “experts in the law.” These scholars are probably the same people whom Luke calls “teachers of the law” (see 5:17b) or “scribes” (see 5:21a). You may use the same term to translate both of these words. Some ways to translate experts in Moses’ Teachings include:
teachers of the laws of Moses
experts in the Jewish laws
those who knew well the laws which God gave to Moses
Most teachers of the law were Pharisees, but not all Pharisees were teachers of the law.

(GW) They refused to be baptized: The clause They refused to be baptized is literally “not having been baptized by him.”The verb form is an aorist passive participle. The connection between it and 7:30a is similar to the connection between 7:29b and 7:29c. Some ways to express it are:

In some languages it may be more natural to change the order of the parts of this verse. For example:

Here and elsewhere in the book, the term lawyers does not mean people who would represent clients and argue cases in court or draw up legal documents. Rather, it refers to experts in the law of Moses and its application to various situations. Alternate translation: [experts in the Jewish law]
