Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible—click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations—the older translations are further down the page (so you can read up from the bottom to trace the English translation history). The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible—please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

11:28 even more blessed: Jesus again affirmed that our spiritual life and our relationship with God are more important than physical ancestry and family relationships (cp. 8:21).
A woman in the crowd was very impressed with the way Jesus had answered his critics in the previous section. So she pronounced a blessing on Jesus’ mother. By doing this, the woman was praising Jesus himself. Jesus replied that the people who were truly happy/blessed were those who listened to the word of God and obeyed it.
Some other possible headings for this section are:
People Who Are Truly Happy (NCV)
True Happiness (GNT)
This story occurs only in Luke.
But He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
But Jesus replied, “God blesses even more those who listen to his word and obey/follow it!”
Jesus answered her, “That is true, but the people who hear and obey the message from God are even more fortunate/privileged!”
But: This verse begins in Greek with a conjunction that connects the woman’s statement in 11:27b with Jesus’ contrasting statement in 11:28. Some English versions (GW, NIV, NLT) do not translate this conjunction, but most versions do translate it as “but” in order to show the contrast. For example:
But Jesus answered (GNT)
Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it: The basic meaning of Jesus’ answer is that there is a greater blessing than being the mother of the Messiah. That greater blessing comes from listening to God’s message and obeying it. Another way to translate this is:
But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice. (NLT)
Some other ways to translate this are:
That’s true, but the people who are really blessed are the ones who hear and obey God’s message! (CEV)
Yes, but if you listen to God’s message and obey it, you are even more fortunate/privileged!
Blessed: See the note on Blessed at 11:27b and see bless, Meaning 3, in the Glossary.
rather: The Greek word that the BSB translates as rather introduces a correction of what the woman had said. Jesus did not say that what the woman said was false, but he stated that there was something even more important.
In some languages, there are different ways of respectfully correcting or partially disagreeing with what another person has said. Notice that some English versions introduce Jesus’ answer with an affirmative, others with a negative. For example:
That’s true, but… (CEV)
No, happy are those who… (REB)
Consider how you would respectfully correct another person’s statement in your language.
the word of God: Here the word of God may refer to both the words/message that God communicated through Jesus and to the written Scriptures. Another way to translate this is:
God’s message (CEV)
Try to translate this phrase in a way that will allow both meanings.
μενοῦν, μακάριοι
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: αὐτός Δέ εἶπεν Μενοῦν μακάριοι οἱ ἀκούοντες τόν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ καί φυλάσσοντες)
Jesus is not saying that his mother is not blessed. He is saying that the people he is about to describe are even more blessed. Alternate translation: [It is even better for]
οἱ ἀκούοντες τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ φυλάσσοντες
the_‹ones› hearing (Some words not found in SR-GNT: αὐτός Δέ εἶπεν Μενοῦν μακάριοι οἱ ἀκούοντες τόν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ καί φυλάσσοντες)
Alternate translation: [those who listen carefully to the message God has spoken and obey it]
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ
(Some words not found in SR-GNT: αὐτός Δέ εἶπεν Μενοῦν μακάριοι οἱ ἀκούοντες τόν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ καί φυλάσσοντες)
Jesus uses the term word to describe the message that has come from God in the form of words. Alternate translation: [the message God has spoken]
