3:6 the water and ¦ — ECM NA28 [Note: In the initial phrase of this verse, the Greek text literally says through which. In the main Greek text the expression is plural, likely referring to the water and the word (although it could refer to the heavens and the earth, the heavens, or the waters). But in the ECM and NA28 variant the expression is singular, likely referring only to the word. The likely referents of the pronouns have been stated explicitly in the translation and footnote for the sake of clarity and flow.]

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

3:1-13 Peter shifts from denunciation of false teachers to exhortation of believers. The false teachers’ skepticism about Christ’s return required clear teaching. Christians need to hold onto the apostolic message about the day of judgment and live godly lives in anticipation of that day.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns

δι’ ὧν

through which

Here, which refers both to God’s word and water. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this explicitly. Alternate translation: [through the word of God and water]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ὕδατι κατακλυσθεὶς

˱in˲_water /having_been/_flooded

If your language does not use this passive form, you can state this in active form and you can state who did the action. You may need to begin a new sentence. Alternate translation: [God flooded the world with water]

ὁ τότε κόσμος

the then world

Here, at that time refers to the time when the world existed before the flood. It does not refer to the exact time when the universe was created. Alternate translation: [the world that existed then]

ὕδατι κατακλυσθεὶς

˱in˲_water /having_been/_flooded

This phrase indicates the means by which the ancient world was destroyed. Alternate translation: [by having been flooded by water]
