UTNuW Translation Notes:

2 Peter 3 Chapter Introduction

Structure and Formatting

1. Reminder that Jesus will return at the right time ([3:1–13](../03/01.md))2. Concluding exhortation to live godly lives ([3:14–17](../03/14.md))

Religious and Cultural Concepts in This Chapter

Fire

People often use fire to destroy things or to make something pure by burning off the dirt and worthless parts. Therefore, when God punishes the wicked or purifies his people, that action is often associated with fire.

Day of the Lord

The exact time of the coming day of the Lord will come as a surprise to people. This is what the simile “like a thief in the night” means. Because of this, Christians are to be prepared at all times for the coming of the Lord. (See: dayofthelord and figs-simile)
