TSNTyndale Study Notes:

3:1-13 Peter shifts from denunciation of false teachers to exhortation of believers. The false teachers’ skepticism about Christ’s return required clear teaching. Christians need to hold onto the apostolic message about the day of judgment and live godly lives in anticipation of that day.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

τούτων οὕτως πάντων λυομένων

these_‹things› thus all /being/_destroyed

This clause indicates the reason for the expected result that follows in the rest of the verse. Peter tells his readers that God’s future destruction of heaven and earth should result in them living holy and godly lives. Alternate translation: “Because of all of these things being thus destroyed”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

τούτων οὕτως πάντων λυομένων

these_‹things› thus all /being/_destroyed

If your language does not use this passive form, you can state this in active form and you can state who will do the action. Alternate translation: “Since God will thus destroy all of these things”

Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns

τούτων

these_‹things›

Here, these things refers to the heavens, the elements, and the earth mentioned in the previous verse. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this explicitly. Alternate translation: “these things that I have just described”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

ποταποὺς δεῖ ὑπάρχειν ὑμᾶς?

what_kind_of_‹people› ˱it˲_/is/_fitting /to_be/_being you_all

Peter is using the question form for emphasis. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this emphasis by translating his words as a statement or an exclamation and communicate the emphasis in another way. If it you translate these words as a statement, then you will need to change the question mark at the end of the next verse into a period. Alternate translation: “it is certainly necessary for you to be”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

ἐν ἁγίαις ἀναστροφαῖς καὶ εὐσεβείαις

in holy conduct and devoutness

Peter is leaving out words that this clause would need in many languages in order to be complete. These words can be supplied from the context. Alternate translation: “living with holy behaviors and godly acts”
