TSNTyndale Study Notes:

4:1-42 At a historic well in Samaria, Jesus offered himself as living water. Jesus engaged and confronted people with the revelation of God, and they either followed or fell away.
• The Samaritan woman contrasted with Nicodemus at every turn: a woman (not a man), a Samaritan (not a Jew), a sinner (not righteous), and an outcast (not one of Israel’s rabbis). While Nicodemus fell silent and never responded to Jesus’ challenges (3:1-21), this woman acknowledged Jesus as Lord, remained in the light, and exhibited signs of discipleship (see 1:35-51).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / pastforfuture

λέγει

/is/_saying

Here John uses the present tense in past narration in order to call attention to a development in the story.

γύναι

woman

Here, woman refers to the Samaritan woman. If it is impolite to call someone “woman” in your language, you can use another word that is polite, or leave it out.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ἔρχεται ὥρα

/is/_coming /an/_hour

Here, hour refers to a point in time when something happens. It does not refer to a 60-minute length of time. See the discussion of this in the General Notes to this chapter. Alternate translation: “a point in time is coming”

Note 3 topic: guidelines-sonofgodprinciples

Πατρί

Father

Father is an important title for God.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ

on ¬the mountain this

Here, this mountain refers to Mount Gerizim. See how you translated this phrase in the previous verse. Alternate translation: “here on Mount Gerizim”
