OET (OET-LV)If anyone is_coming to you_all, and is_ not _bringing this the teaching, not be_receiving him into ^your_house, and not be_saying to_be_rejoicing to_him,

OET (OET-RV)If anyone comes to you all and doesn’t bring this same message, don’t accept that person into your house, and don’t tell them that it’s good

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

εἴ τις ἔρχεται πρὸς ὑμᾶς, καὶ ταύτην τὴν διδαχὴν οὐ φέρει

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Εἰ τὶς ἔρχεται πρός ὑμᾶς καί ταύτην τήν διδαχήν οὒ φέρει μή λαμβάνετε αὐτόν εἰς οἰκίαν καί χαίρειν αὐτῷ μή λέγετε)

The word anyone here implies “any teacher or preacher.” John does not want the believers to welcome any teacher who does not teach what Jesus taught, and specifically that Jesus came as a human being (See: [1:7](../01/07.md)). Alternate translation: [If anyone comes to you claiming to be a teacher, but he teaches differently than this]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ταύτην τὴν διδαχὴν οὐ φέρει

this (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Εἰ τὶς ἔρχεται πρός ὑμᾶς καί ταύτην τήν διδαχήν οὒ φέρει μή λαμβάνετε αὐτόν εἰς οἰκίαν καί χαίρειν αὐτῷ μή λέγετε)

John is speaking of a teaching or a message as if it were an object that someone could bring. If you would not use this kind of metaphor in your language, you could use one that has the same meaning or use plain language. Alternate translation: [does not teach this same message]

Note 3 topic: writing-pronouns

ταύτην τὴν διδαχὴν

this (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Εἰ τὶς ἔρχεται πρός ὑμᾶς καί ταύτην τήν διδαχήν οὒ φέρει μή λαμβάνετε αὐτόν εἰς οἰκίαν καί χαίρειν αὐτῷ μή λέγετε)

The phrase this teaching refers to the teaching mentioned in [verse 7](../01/07.md) that Jesus Christ came as a real human being. If this is not clear for your readers, you could mention that teaching again here. Alternate translation: [this teaching that Jesus came in the flesh]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

μὴ λαμβάνετε αὐτὸν εἰς οἰκίαν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Εἰ τὶς ἔρχεται πρός ὑμᾶς καί ταύτην τήν διδαχήν οὒ φέρει μή λαμβάνετε αὐτόν εἰς οἰκίαν καί χαίρειν αὐτῷ μή λέγετε)

John does not want the believers to accept a false teacher into their homes and, as a result, support his false teaching by showing him respect and providing for his needs. Alternate translation: [do not support him or encourage him by welcoming him into your home]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

χαίρειν αὐτῷ μὴ λέγετε

˓to_be˒_rejoicing ˱to˲_him (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Εἰ τὶς ἔρχεται πρός ὑμᾶς καί ταύτην τήν διδαχήν οὒ φέρει μή λαμβάνετε αὐτόν εἰς οἰκίαν καί χαίρειν αὐτῷ μή λέγετε)

John warns the believers not to greet a false teacher respectfully in public. The implication is that he does not want them to do anything that might look like they are endorsing a false teacher or that would give a false teacher good standing in the eyes of others. Alternate translation: [do not give him a respectful public greeting]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:4-11 John now applies the truth and love that he mentioned in the introduction (1:1-3) to the readers’ situation. Living in truth and love means maintaining fellowship with true Christians (1:4-6), but also discerning false teachers and refusing to listen to them or help them (1:7-11).
