OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_was after the_death of_Yəhōshūˊa/(Joshua) and_inquired the_people of_Yisrāʼēl/(Israel) in/on/at/with_LORD to_say who will_he_go_up to/for_ourselves against the_Kənaˊₐ in/on/at/with_first to_fight in/on/over_him/it.

OET (OET-RV)After Yehoshua’s death, the Israelis asked Yahweh, “Which tribe should go first to attack the Canaanites?”

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

וַיְהִ֗י

and=he/it_was

The author is using the phrase And it happened to introduce a new event in the story of the people of Israel, which continues here in the book of Judges at the point where it left off at the end of the book of Joshua. Use a word, phrase, or other method in your language that is natural for introducing a new event.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

sons_of Yisrael

See the discussion of the phrase the sons of Israel in the Introduction to Judges. Alternate translation: “the people of Israel”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / personification

מִ֣י יַעֲלֶה

who? it_will_ascend

The Israelites are asking Yahweh which of their tribes should be the first to go into its allotment and fight against the Canaanites living there. They are speaking of that tribe as if it were an individual person. (The verb in this phrase is singular, indicating that Who is also singular.) See the discussion of this issue, which occurs several times in this chapter, in the General Notes to this chapter. Alternate translation: “What tribe will go up”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive

לָּ֧נוּ

to/for=ourselves

By us, the Israelites mean themselves but not Yahweh, to whom they are speaking, so use the exclusive form of that word in your translation if your language marks that distinction.

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֛י & בּֽוֹ

the,Canaanites & in/on/over=him/it

As the General Notes to this chapter discuss, here and in similar instances throughout the chapter, this is not a reference to a specific Canaanite. Rather, it refers to the Canaanites or the Canaanite nations in general. It may be more natural in your language to express this meaning by using plural forms. Alternate translation: “the Canaanites … against them” or “the Canaanite nations … against them”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:1–3:6 Two prologues (1:1–2:5 and 2:6–3:6) preface the body of the book. Both begin with the death of Joshua (1:1; cp. 2:8), thus connecting Judges with the preceding narrative (Josh 24:29-33; cp. Josh 1:1; 2 Sam 1:1).

1:1–2:5 The first prologue describes the unfaithfulness of the tribes in their failure to carry out Joshua’s farewell charge (Josh 23).

1:1 The request for divine guidance (see Exod 28:30; Num 27:21; 1 Sam 14:41; 28:6; cp. Josh 7:14) is a reminder that the Lord’s covenant with Israel included the taking of the land.
