OET (OET-LV)Everyone which going_beyond and not remaining in the teaching of_the chosen_one/messiah, is_ not _having god, the one remaining in the teaching, this one is_having both the father and the son.

OET (OET-RV)Anyone who doesn’t stay with the messiah’s teaching or adds more to it doesn’t have God—it’s the person who continues in the his teaching that has both the father and the son with them.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

πᾶς ὁ προάγων καὶ μὴ μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Πᾶς ὁ προάγων καί μή μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ Θεόν οὐκ ἔχει ὁ μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ οὗτος καί τόν Πατέρα καί τόν Υἱόν ἔχει)

John figuratively refers to the teaching of Christ as a place where faithful believers remain and also as a place that false teachers leave as they go beyond. The expression going beyond refers to teaching new and false things that Jesus did not teach. Alternate translation: [Everyone who teaches things that Jesus did not teach]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

πᾶς ὁ προάγων καὶ μὴ μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Πᾶς ὁ προάγων καί μή μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ Θεόν οὐκ ἔχει ὁ μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ οὗτος καί τόν Πατέρα καί τόν Υἱόν ἔχει)

These two phrases mean the same thing, one stated positively (going beyond) and the other stated negatively (not remaining). If it is more natural in your language, you can reverse the order of these, as in the UST.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

Θεὸν οὐκ ἔχει

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Πᾶς ὁ προάγων καί μή μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ Θεόν οὐκ ἔχει ὁ μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ οὗτος καί τόν Πατέρα καί τόν Υἱόν ἔχει)

To have God means to have a relationship with God as Savior through faith in Jesus Christ. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this explicitly. Alternate translation: [does not have a right relationship with God] or [does not truly know God]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

ὁ μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ, οὗτος καὶ τὸν Πατέρα καὶ τὸν Υἱὸν ἔχει

¬which the_‹one› remaining in the teaching this_‹one› (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Πᾶς ὁ προάγων καί μή μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ Θεόν οὐκ ἔχει ὁ μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ οὗτος καί τόν Πατέρα καί τόν Υἱόν ἔχει)

By one, John does not mean a particular person. He means anyone remaining in the teaching of Jesus. Alternate translation: [Anyone who follows Christ’s teaching belongs to both the Father and the Son]

Note 5 topic: grammar-connect-logic-contrast

ὁ μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ

¬which the_‹one› remaining in the teaching

This phrase is in contrast to the previous sentence. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase to mark this contrast, as in the UST.

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / nominaladj

οὗτος

this_‹one›

John is using the demonstrative adjective this as a noun, to refer to a kind of person. ULT indicates this by adding the word one. If your language does not use adjectives in this way, you can translate this with an equivalent phrase. Alternate translation: [such a person] or [that kind of person]

Note 7 topic: guidelines-sonofgodprinciples

τὸν Πατέρα καὶ τὸν Υἱὸν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Πᾶς ὁ προάγων καί μή μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ τοῦ Χριστοῦ Θεόν οὐκ ἔχει ὁ μένων ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ οὗτος καί τόν Πατέρα καί τόν Υἱόν ἔχει)

Father and Son are important titles that describe the relationship between God and Jesus Christ. Be sure to express these titles consistently and accurately.

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:9 Anyone who wanders away from this teaching (literally everyone going beyond and not remaining in the teaching): To go beyond is to contradict the apostolic teachings about Jesus Christ and believe things about Jesus that were not taught by the apostles. This is a warning to the church not to listen to the false teachers.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
