TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:2 The confidence that they have eternal life enables God’s people to live in the present in light of the future (see 2:11-14; 3:7-8).
• God—who does not lie: The true God contrasts with popular Cretan conceptions (see study note on 1:12). This statement also underlines God’s plan of salvation as unchanging (1:1): God can be trusted to fulfill his promises (see Num 23:19; 1 Sam 15:29; Rom 3:3-4).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

ἐπ’ ἐλπίδι ζωῆς αἰωνίου

in /the/_hope ˱of˲_life eternal

Here hope could be connected to: (1) godliness, meaning that if we live to please God, we will have hope of eternal life. Alternate translation: “which gives us the certain hope of everlasting life” or (2) knowledge of the truth, meaning that this hope of eternal life is part of the truth, and that knowing the truth gives hope of eternal life. Alternate translation: “and that teaches us to expect eternal life”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

ἐπ’ ἐλπίδι ζωῆς αἰωνίου

in /the/_hope ˱of˲_life eternal

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea of hope, you could express the same idea in another way. Alternate translation: “which leads us to confidently expect eternal life”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives

ὁ ἀψευδὴς Θεὸς

the unlying God

If it would be clearer in your language, you could use a positive expression here instead of this double negative. Alternate translation: “the God who is completely trustworthy”

πρὸ χρόνων αἰωνίων

before times eternal

Alternate translation: “before time began”
