16 After I’d given the purchase deed to Neriyah’s son Baruk, I prayed to Yahweh, saying: 17 Oh no, master Yahweh. Listen, you alone made the heavens and the earth by taking action and using your incredible strength. Nothing you say is too difficult for you to do. 18 You show loyal commitment to thousands, and pour people’s guilt into their children’s laps after them. You are the strong and powerful god—your name is Commander-in-chief Yahweh. 19 You are very wise and do incredible things, because your eyes are open to all the people’s ways—to give each person what their conduct and actions deserve. 20 You did miracles and amazing things in Egypt (Heb. Mitsrayim), remembered to this day, and you’ve made a name for yourself in Yisrael and among humankind. 21 You brought your people Yisrael out from Egypt using miracles and amazing things and by taking action and using your incredible strength, along with great terror. 22 Then you gave them this land which you had promised their ancestors that you’d give them—a land flowing with milk and honey. 23 So they entered and took possession of it, but they didn’t listen to your voice or follow your instructions. They didn’t do anything that you’d ordered them to do so you’ve brought all this calamity onto them.
24 Look, the siege mounds have reached up to the city to capture it, and its been handed over to the Babylonians (Heb. Chaldeans) who’ve been fighting it. Everything you said would happen has, including war, famine, and deadly diseases, and you’re there watching it. 25 Then you yourself told me, ‘Use silver to buy yourself a field, and have witnesses witness it, even though this city is being handed over to the Babylonians (Heb. Chaldeans).’
26 Then Yahweh gave Yirmeyah this message: 27 Listen, I’m Yahweh, the god of all mankind. Is there anything that’s too difficult for me to do? 28 Therefore Yahweh says this, ‘Listen, I’m about to hand this city over to the Babylonians—the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar will capture it.[ref] 29 The soldiers who are fighting against this city will come and set fire to this city and burn it. Those people who worship Baal on their flat roofs, and who poured out drink offerings to other gods in order to provoke me, will now have their houses burnt down 30 because the people of Yisrael and Yehudah have certainly been people who’ve been doing evil in front of me since their youth. The people of Israel have certainly offended me with the practices and activities. That is Yahweh’s declaration. 31 Yahweh declares that the people of this city has provoked my anger and fury since the day that they built it, and then right up to the present day, so I’ll will remove it right out of my sight, 32 because of all the wicked things that the people of Yisrael and Yehudah have done to provoke me—their kings, princes, priests, prophets, and every person in Yehudah including Yerushalem’s inhabitants. 33 They turned their backs to me instead of their faces, even though I had eagerly taught them. I tried to teach them, but they wouldn’t listen or receive correction. 34 They set up their detestable idols in the house that is called by my name, in order to defile it,[ref] 35 and they built hilltop shrines for Baal along the Ben-Hinnom Valley in order to pass their sons and daughters through the fire for Molek.[ref] I didn’t command them to do that—it never entered my mind that they should do that detestable thing and so cause Yehudah to sin.’[ref]
2Ki 25:1-11:
In the ninth year of Tsidkiyah’s reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month, the Babylonian King Nevukadnetstsar brought all his army to Yerushalem. They made their camp outside the city, and then built attack structures all around it 2 and besieged the city for two years. 3 The people didn’t have enough to eat and the famine became severe. 4 Then the Babylonians began breaking into the city, but the local fighters sneaked out at night through a gate between two walls near the king’s garden and escaped down to the desert plain. 5 However, the Babylonian soldiers chased after the king and they overtook him on the Yeriho (Jericho) plains, and his army scattered. 6 King Tsidkiyah was captured and taken to the Babylonian king at Rivlah, where he was sentenced—7 He was forced to watch as his sons were slaughtered, then his eyes were gouged out and he was taken to Babylon restrained with two bronze chains.
8 On the seventh day of the fifth month of Babylonian King Nevukadnetstsar’s nineteenth year as king, his servant Nevuzaradan, who was his chief bodyguard, went to Yerushalem. 9 He set fire to Yahweh’s temple and the palace, and all of Yerushalem’s houses, so no important building remained. 10 Then the army under the command of Nevuzaradan tore down the walls surrounding Yerushalem. 11 He exiled all the rest of the people from the city, all the surrendered soldiers, and the rest of the population,
2Ch 36:17-21:
17 So Yahweh sent the Chaldean king against them, and they ran their young men through with the sword, even in the temple, and they didn’t spare any of the young men or women, or even those who were older or elderly—God allowed Nebuchadnezzar to thoroughly defeat them.[ref] 18 Then he took everything valuable, big or small, from God’s temple as well as from the king and his officials. 19 They set God’s temple on fire, and tore down some of the wall surrounding Yerushalem, burnt all its palaces, and destroyed everything valuable.[ref] 20 Anyone else who was still alive was taken to Babylon where they became servants to the king and his children, until the time when the Persians came to power. 21 That fulfilled God’s message that Yirmeyah had previously proclaimed, that the land would become desolate to make up for the Rest Days that had been ignored—that took seventy years. [ref]
2Ki 23:10:
10 Yoshiyah also desecrated the Tofet, which was in the Ben-Hinnom valley, so that the people couldn’t sacrifice their children to Molek.
Jer 7:30-31:
30 Yes, Yahweh says that Yehudah’s people have done what I consider evil—putting disgusting things in the temple that’s associated with my name, and so have defiled it. 31 They’ve built hilltop shrines to Tofet in Hinnom Valley outside Yerushalem (Jerusalem) to burn their sons and daughters in fire—something I’ve never commanded or even considered.[ref]
19:1-6:
Take some of the elders and some of the priests,
and go and buy a clay flask from the potter.
2 Then go out to the Ben-Hinnom Valley by the Broken Pottery Gate,
and then proclaim the words that I’ll tell you there.[ref]
3 Tell them:
You kings of Yehudah (Judah) and you residents of Yerushalem,
Yisrael’s god, Commander-in-chief Yahweh says,
Listen, I’m about to send calamity to this place,
and the ears of everyone who hears about it will tingle.
4 I’m doing that because they’ve abandoned me and defiled this place—
they’ve burnt incense to other ‘gods’,
that neither they or their ancestors or Yehudah’s kings used to know.
Then they’ve filled this place with the blood of the innocent.
5 They built hilltop shrines to burn their children in the fire as offerings to Baal,
something I never instructed or talked about, nor did it even enter my mind.[ref]
6 So Yahweh declares that the time is coming when this place will no longer be called Tofet or the Valley of Ben-Hinnom, but rather, the ‘Valley of Slaughter’.
Jer 7:31:
31 They’ve built hilltop shrines to Tofet in Hinnom Valley outside Yerushalem (Jerusalem) to burn their sons and daughters in fire—something I’ve never commanded or even considered.[ref]
Lev 18:21:
21 Don’t sacrifice your children to Molek so you don’t profane your god’s reputation. I am Yahweh.[ref]
