Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

8:12-59 The debate about whether or not Jesus is the Messiah continues from 7:52. Jesus was still at the Festival of Shelters in Jerusalem. During the festival, the conflicts Jesus had endured in ch 7 continued and intensified.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
διὰ τί τὴν λαλιὰν τὴν ἐμὴν οὐ γινώσκετε?
for_reason why ¬the speech ¬the my not ˱you_all˲_/are/_knowing
Jesus is using a rhetorical question here to emphasize the truth of what he is saying. If you would not use a rhetorical question for this purpose in your language, you could translate his words as a statement or an exclamation and communicate the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: “I will tell you why you do not understand what I say!”
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
οὐ δύνασθε ἀκούειν τὸν λόγον τὸν ἐμόν
not not ˱you_all˲_/are/_being_able /to_be/_hearing ¬the word ¬the my
Here, hear means to listen to something with the intent to heed it and respond appropriately. It does not mean simply to hear what someone says. If this might confuse your readers, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “you are not able to heed my words”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
τὸν λόγον τὸν ἐμόν
¬the word ¬the my
Here, Jesus uses words to refer to his teachings. See how you translated this phrase in 5:47. Alternate translation: “my teachings.”
