Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

8:12-59 The debate about whether or not Jesus is the Messiah continues from 7:52. Jesus was still at the Festival of Shelters in Jerusalem. During the festival, the conflicts Jesus had endured in ch 7 continued and intensified.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / infostructure

ἀλλ’ ὁ πέμψας με ἀληθής ἐστιν, κἀγὼ ἃ ἤκουσα παρ’ αὐτοῦ, ταῦτα λαλῶ εἰς τὸν κόσμον

but the_‹one› /having/_sent me true is and_I what heard from him these_‹things› ˱I˲_/am/_speaking to the world

If it would be more natural in your language, you could change the order of these phrases and make a new sentence. Alternate translation: [But I will say to the world the things that I heard from him who sent me. He is true]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / extrainfo

ὁ πέμψας με & παρ’ αὐτοῦ

the_‹one› /having/_sent me & from him

These phrases refer to God. However, since the Jewish leaders did not understand what Jesus meant when he used these phrases, you do not need to explain their meaning further here.

ὁ πέμψας με ἀληθής ἐστιν

the_‹one› /having/_sent me true is

Here, true means to be truthful or to speak only the truth. If this use of true would be confusing in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [the one who sent me is truthful] or [the one who sent me tells the truth]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

κἀγὼ ἃ ἤκουσα παρ’ αὐτοῦ, ταῦτα

and_I what heard from him these_‹things›

Jesus says that the one who sent him is true in order to imply that these things he heard and spoke are true. If it would be more natural in your language, you could state this explicitly. Alternate translation: [and the true things that I heard from him, these true things]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

ταῦτα λαλῶ εἰς τὸν κόσμον

these_‹things› ˱I˲_/am/_speaking to the world

Here, John records Jesus using the world to refer to the people who live in the world. If this might confuse your readers, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [these things I say to everyone]
