TSNTyndale Study Notes:

8:41 your real father: Jesus knew who controlled them.
• We aren’t illegitimate children! This was both a defense and an attack. In Greek, the pronoun we is emphatic: “We [in contrast to you] are not illegitimate,” implying that Jesus was illegitimate (see Matt 1:18-25).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / extrainfo

ὑμεῖς ποιεῖτε τὰ ἔργα τοῦ πατρὸς ὑμῶν

you_all /are/_doing the works ˱of˲_the father ˱of˲_you_all

Jesus uses the phrase your father to refer to the devil. However, since the Jews did not understand what Jesus meant when he used this phrase, you do not need to explain its meaning further here.

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἡμεῖς ἐκ πορνείας οὐ γεγεννήμεθα

we of sexual_immorality not /have_been/_born

Here, the Jews imply that Jesus does not know who his real father is and that his birth is the result of an immoral sexual relationship. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could express the meaning explicitly. Alternate translation: “We do not know about you, but we are not illegitimate children” or “We were all born from proper marriages”
