OET (OET-LV)From for you_all has_been_sounded_out the message of_the master, not only in the Makedonia and in the Aⱪaia, but in every place the faith of_you_all which toward the god has_come_out, so_as no need to_be_having us to_be_speaking anything.

OET (OET-RV)So now the message of the master has been heard not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place where your faith towards God has been seen—so that now we don’t even need to say anything.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:2–10: Paul thanked God for the way that the Thessalonians had believed the gospel and continued to obey God

Paragraph 1:4–10

Paul knew that the Thessalonians to whom he wrote were people whom God had chosen to be his own people. He knew this because he saw how they had responded when he and his companions preached the gospel to them. The Thessalonians not only observed that Paul and his companions believed what they preached. They also saw that the Holy Spirit confirmed that what they said was true. The result was that some of the Thessalonians believed in Jesus, even though fellow citizens persecuted them. Other believers in the regions of Macedonia and Achaia heard about how the Thessalonians had believed the gospel. Therefore, the Thessalonians had become an example to many people in different places. The result was that wherever Paul and his companions went to preach, the people there had already heard how the Thessalonians had become believers in Christ.

1:8a

For not only did the message of the Lord ring out from you

For: The Greek conjunction that the BSB translates as For connects back to 1:7. In 1:7, Paul explained that the Thessalonians had become a model for other believers. In this verse he explained how that happened. Some English versions do not translate this conjunction. Connect this verse to 1:7 in a natural way in your language.

did the message of the Lord ring out from you: Paul used a metaphor here. When someone blows a trumpet or a horn the sound of the instrument spreads out from that place. In a similar way, the Lord’s message had spread out from the Thessalonians to the rest of Greece and beyond.

the message of the Lord: In this context this probably refers to the gospel. Here is another way to translate this:

the message about the Lord (GNT)

The text does not tell us how the gospel went forth from the Thessalonians. They themselves may have sent out missionaries to other towns. Alternatively, travelers and traders may have told people in other places about how the Thessalonian Christians believed in God and how they behaved.

1:8b

to Macedonia and Achaia,

1:8c

but your faith in God has gone out to every place,

every place: This is hyperbole, that is, exaggerated language to emphasize something. It means “many places.” If you cannot use hyperbole in your language, you can clarify it in one of the following ways:

Either of these is acceptable. The Display follows the first.

1:8d

so that we have no need to say anything more.

so that we have no need to say anything more: This does not mean that Paul and his companions did not need to preach the gospel anymore. It means that they did not need to tell people how the Thessalonians had believed in God.

anything more: Here Paul implies that he does not need to say anything more about what he had just been talking about in 1:8c, the Thessalonians’ faith in God.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐξήχηται

˓has_been˒_sounded_out

Here, Paul speaks as if the Thessalonians were playing an instrument that makes a sound that can be heard from far away. He means that people in many places hear the word of the Lord because of how the Thessalonians act. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a comparable figure of speech or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: [has shone forth] or [has been heard]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

1:2-10 After thanking God for the faith, love, and hope of the Thessalonian believers (1:2-3), Paul recalls how the Good News was proclaimed to them (1:4-5) and how they accepted its message (1:6-10). Paul returns to these themes in 2:1-12 and 2:13-16.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
