OET (OET-RV)Concerning the times and seasons, brothers and sisters, you don’t need anything to be written

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 4:13–5:11: Paul taught about when the Lord Jesus would return

Paul explained that when the Lord Jesus returns, God will cause both the Christians who have died and those who will still be alive to ascend to meet the Lord Jesus in the sky. He also explained how the Thessalonians should behave as they waited for the Lord to return.

Paragraph 5:1–3

Paul reminded the Thessalonians that no one can know when Jesus will return. When unbelievers think that all is well, Jesus will come suddenly, and they will not be able to escape being judged and punished by him.

5:1

Now about the times and seasons, brothers, we do not need to write to you.

Now: This is the start of a new paragraph. Here Paul answered another question the Thessalonians must have asked him, about when exactly Jesus would return. As in 4:9a, the BSB has once more used the word Now to signal a new paragraph. Read the note on 4:9a for advice on how to translate this word.

about the times and seasons: When the Greek words chronoi (times) and kairoi (seasons) occur together in Scripture, it is often when people are speaking about future events. For an example, see Acts 1:7. There are two possible ways to understand these words here:

  1. There is no real difference in meaning between the two words, and the whole expression is an idiom for “the day of the Lord” (see 5:2b).

  2. There is a difference between the two words. The word chronoi (times) refers to “duration of time.” The word kairoi (seasons) refers to “the significant events that happen before Jesus will return.” Here is one way to translate this possible sense of the expression:

    times and occasions (GNT)

It is not easy to decide between these two opinions. However, in this passage Paul’s main subject was “the day of the Lord.” So it is logical to assume that here he was referring to the time when the day of the Lord would occur. It is therefore recommended that you follow the first option (1).

brothers: See the note on 1:4.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

δὲ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: περί Δέ τῶν χρόνων καί τῶν καιρῶν ἀδελφοί οὒ χρείαν ἔχετε ὑμῖν γράφεσθαι)

Here, the word Now introduces a new section in the letter. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces a new section, or you could leave Now untranslated. Alternate translation: [Next,]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τῶν χρόνων καὶ τῶν καιρῶν

the times the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: περί Δέ τῶν χρόνων καί τῶν καιρῶν ἀδελφοί οὒ χρείαν ἔχετε ὑμῖν γράφεσθαι)

Here Paul implies that the times and the seasons relate to questions concerning when Jesus will come back. In other words, Paul has begun to talk about the timing of Jesus’ second coming. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this idea more explicit. Alternate translation: [the times and the seasons after which Jesus will return] or [the times and the seasons related to Jesus’ second coming]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

τῶν χρόνων καὶ τῶν καιρῶν

the times the (Some words not found in SR-GNT: περί Δέ τῶν χρόνων καί τῶν καιρῶν ἀδελφοί οὒ χρείαν ἔχετε ὑμῖν γράφεσθαι)

The terms times and seasons mean similar things. Paul is using the two terms together to refer in general to the timing of Jesus’ second coming. If it would be clearer for your readers, you could express this idea with a single phrase. Alternate translation: [the precise time] or [the periods of time]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ὑμῖν γράφεσθαι

˱to˲_you_all ˓to_be_being˒_written

If your language does not use this passive form, you could express the idea in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. If you need to say who would do the action, it is clear from the context that it would be Paul and his fellow workers. Alternate translation: [for us to write anything to you]
