ULTFor the men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, proud, blasphemous, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,

USTIt will be dangerous because people will care about themselves more than they care about anyone else. They will strongly desire to have money. They will say great things about themselves. They will think too highly of themselves. They will insult God and others. They will fail to do what their parents require. They will not thank anyone for anything. They will not honor God.

MSG(1-5)Don’t be naive. There are difficult times ahead. As the end approaches, people are going to be self-absorbed, money-hungry, self-promoting, stuck-up, profane, contemptuous of parents, crude, coarse, dog-eat-dog, unbending, slanderers, impulsively wild, savage, cynical, treacherous, ruthless, bloated windbags, addicted to lust, and allergic to God. They’ll make a show of religion, but behind the scenes they’re animals. Stay clear of these people.

FBVPeople will love themselves and love money. They will be boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, and without God in their lives.

TCNTFor people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemous, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,

T4TThis is because such evil people will be habitually loving themselves and loving money. They will habitually boast about themselves, they will be proud, and will often say bad things about others. They will disobey their parents. They will not be thankful, nor will they respect anything that is good.

3.2 Seipsos amantes.

3.2 Seipsos amantes. Not/No the_Master, as Petrus, who ter interrogatus from Master, ter professus it_is himself him to_love saying: You(sg) scis because amo you(sg). Whence and Master to_him sheep pascendas credidit: because in/into/on pascendis ovibus vera mountaintratur belovedo, when/but_if who/any there not/no seeks his_own, but which of_Christ are. TSNTyndale Study Notes:

3:1-5 Paul describes what people will be like in the last days (see also 1 Tim 4:1-5; 2 Pet 2:1-22; 3:3; Jude 1:18), which had already begun (2 Tim 3:5, 6-9).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

γὰρ

for

Here the word For introduces a reason why the times will be difficult. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces a reason or basis for a claim, or you could leave For untranslated. Alternate translation: [That is because] or [Here is why:]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / genericnoun

οἱ ἄνθρωποι

¬the people

The phrase the men represents people in general, not one particular set of men. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea in another way. Alternate translation: [men]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

οἱ ἄνθρωποι

¬the people

Although the term men is masculine, Paul is using the word in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a phrase that makes this clear. Alternate translation: [the men and women]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

φίλαυτοι

selfish

Here the phrase lovers of self refers people who love themselves more than they love other people. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. Alternate translation: [lovers of themselves more than others] or [lovers of themselves most of all]
