OET (OET-RV)But I’ll speak out my gratitude as I sacrifice to you. I’ve vowed this and I’ll do it, because Yahweh is my rescuer.”

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:1–10: Jonah thanked the LORD for rescuing him

This section records the prayer that Jonah prayed after he was swallowed by the fish. Notice that the prayer is in the form of poetry. (Both BSB and GNT show this.) Therefore the structure of chapter two is very different from the other three chapters in Jonah, which are narrative material. If possible, try to translate the material in this chapter in a natural poetic form in your language. However, remember that the message is more important than the form in which it is written.

2:10

And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land: The fish obeyed the LORD’s command and vomited Jonah onto the shore. In some languages, it may be necessary to use direct speech for the command (see the second meaning line in the Display of 2:10).

vomited: GNT uses the words “to spit” rather than vomited. However, remember that Jonah was in the belly of the fish and not in its mouth, so the concept of “to vomit” is probably more accurate.

dry land: We do not know where this occurred on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, but you may need to specify that the dry land meant here was the beach or the shore.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה לַדָּ֑ג

(Some words not found in UHB: and,I with,a_voice_of thanksgiving sacrifice to,you which/who vowed pay rescue, to/for=YHWH )

The content of what Yahweh spoke was a command to vomit up Jonah. You could include this information if that would be helpful to your readers. Alternate translation: [And Yahweh told the fish to vomit up Jonah onto the land]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / quotations

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה לַדָּ֑ג

(Some words not found in UHB: and,I with,a_voice_of thanksgiving sacrifice to,you which/who vowed pay rescue, to/for=YHWH )

If it would be more natural in your language, you could express this as a direct quotation. Alternate translation: [And Yahweh said to the fish, ‘Vomit up Jonah onto the dry land’]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicitinfo

אֶל־הַיַּבָּשָֽׁה

(Some words not found in UHB: and,I with,a_voice_of thanksgiving sacrifice to,you which/who vowed pay rescue, to/for=YHWH )

In some languages it would be unnecessary or unnatural to express that the land was dry. If this is true of your language, you could use a more natural expression for the land at the edge of the sea. Alternate translation: [upon the ground] or [onto the shore]
