2:1 Note: KJB: Yōnāh.1.17

OET (OET-RV)Then Yahweh commanded a huge fish to swallow Yonah and he stayed in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights.

SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 2:1–10: Jonah thanked the LORD for rescuing him

This section records the prayer that Jonah prayed after he was swallowed by the fish. Notice that the prayer is in the form of poetry. (Both BSB and GNT show this.) Therefore the structure of chapter two is very different from the other three chapters in Jonah, which are narrative material. If possible, try to translate the material in this chapter in a natural poetic form in your language. However, remember that the message is more important than the form in which it is written.

Paragraph 2:1–2

When the sailors threw Jonah overboard into the sea, he thought he would drown. However, the large fish which the LORD sent swallowed him, so he was saved from the stormy sea.

2:1

From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God,

From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God: Then Jonah prayed the following prayer thanking the LORD for rescuing him (even though he was not yet on dry land!).

his God: This does not mean Jonah owned God. It means the God whom Jonah served and worshiped. Depending on how you have chosen to translate “LORD,” there may be difficulties in translating this combined expression. See the discussion on LORD in the Introduction.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהָ֑יו

(Some words not found in UHB: and=he/it_assigned YHWH fish big/great to,swallow DOM Yōnāh/(Jonah) and=he/it_was Yōnāh/(Jonah) in,the_inward_parts_of of,the_fish three days and,three nights )

Here, the author is using the possessive form to describe Yahweh as the God whom Jonah worshiped. The word his does not mean that Jonah owned God. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [Yahweh, the God to whom he belonged,]

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

2:1-9 Realizing that the Lord had graciously delivered him by sending the fish, Jonah composed this psalm-like prayer. Its careful structure, conforming to the pattern of an individual song of thanksgiving, suggests that it may have been composed after the event, as Jonah recalled his emotions and concerns.
