SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:3–12: Jesus Christ will return and will reward his people as they deserve

This section begins the main part of Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians. Paul thanked God that the Thessalonian believers were still believing firmly in Jesus even though people were persecuting them. He also prayed that everyone would see that the Thessalonian believers were behaving in a manner that would please Jesus Christ when he returns.

Paragraph 1:3–4

Paul thanked God because the faith and love of the Thessalonians was increasing.

1:4a

That is why we boast among God’s churches

That is why: 1:4 refers back to the contents of 1:3c–d and is the result of it, that is, Paul and his companions could boast about the Thessalonians because their faith and love were increasing.

we: Here we is emphatic in the Greek. The commentators do not agree about why Paul used an emphatic pronoun here, but it was probably to emphasize that this was something unusual, that is, that Paul and his companions did not usually boast, but in this case they did.

boast: Boasting in English is usually considered something negative, but here Paul was speaking of the legitimate pride he had in the Thessalonians, as a father would be proud of his children. The verb boast here does not mean “to be proud” but “to speak proudly about.”

among God’s churches: See the notes on 1:1b above and on 1 Thessalonians 2:14a. This could include the believers in Berea, Athens, Corinth (where Paul preached after leaving Thessalonica), and other places that Paul had visited.

1:4b

about your perseverance and faith in the face of all the persecution and affliction you are enduring.

about: This word introduces the things about which Paul was boasting.

your perseverance: This means that the Thessalonians remained steadfast and did not give up when they were persecuted.

in the face of all the persecution: People were persecuting the Thessalonians because they were following Christ.

and affliction: The commentators do not agree about the meaning of the Greek noun thlipsis, which the BSB translates as affliction. There are two main possibilities:

  1. It means almost the same as “persecutions.” Then affliction is a more general term for the sort of sufferings that people were causing for the Thessalonians.

  2. It refers to suffering in a general way and includes problems such as hunger and poverty, which are not necessarily caused by people opposed to Christ.

It is recommended that you follow the first option (1).

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / rpronouns

αὐτοὺς ἡμᾶς

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὥστε αὐτούς ἡμάς ἐν ὑμῖν ἐγκαυχᾶσθαι ἐν ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις τοῦ Θεοῦ ὑπέρ τῆς ὑπομονῆς ὑμῶν καί πίστεως ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς διωγμοῖς ὑμῶν καί ταῖς θλίψεσιν αἷς ἀνέχεσθε)

Here, ourselves is added to we to emphasize that even the apostle Paul and his associates are boasting about the Thessalonian believers. Alternate translation: [even we] or [we are the ones who]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

τῆς ὑπομονῆς ὑμῶν, καὶ πίστεως

the endurance ˱of˲_you_all (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὥστε αὐτούς ἡμάς ἐν ὑμῖν ἐγκαυχᾶσθαι ἐν ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις τοῦ Θεοῦ ὑπέρ τῆς ὑπομονῆς ὑμῶν καί πίστεως ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς διωγμοῖς ὑμῶν καί ταῖς θλίψεσιν αἷς ἀνέχεσθε)

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas of endurance and faith or if it is unclear how these two terms relate, you can express these same ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [how you patiently continue to trust in Jesus] or [how you persevere in believing in the Lord]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς διωγμοῖς ὑμῶν, καὶ ταῖς θλίψεσιν

in in in all the persecutions ˱of˲_you_all (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὥστε αὐτούς ἡμάς ἐν ὑμῖν ἐγκαυχᾶσθαι ἐν ταῖς ἐκκλησίαις τοῦ Θεοῦ ὑπέρ τῆς ὑπομονῆς ὑμῶν καί πίστεως ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς διωγμοῖς ὑμῶν καί ταῖς θλίψεσιν αἷς ἀνέχεσθε)

The two words persecutions and afflictions are saying very similar things. The repetition is used to emphasize how difficult life has been for the Thessalonian believers. If two words are difficult to find in your language or if your language does not use repetition in this way, you can use one word with this meaning and make the emphasis in another way. Alternate translation: [as you have been going through all these very difficult times] or [as people make you suffer in all the ways]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

πίστεως ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς διωγμοῖς ὑμῶν

faith in all the persecutions ˱of˲_you_all

Here, faith in all your persecutions does not mean to believe in or trust in persecutions. If your readers might be confused by that, you could express it more clearly. Alternate translation: [faith in Jesus Christ during all the times you are persecuted]

OET (OET-LV)so_as ourselves us in you_all to_be_boasting, in the assemblies of_ the _god, because/for the endurance of_you_all, and faith in all the persecutions of_you_all, and in_the tribulations that you_all_are_tolerating,

OET (OET-RV)That’s why we boast about you all in God’s assemblies, because of your endurance and faith despite the persecutions you encounter and the tribulations that you put up with.

Note: The OET-RV is still only a first draft, and so far only a few words have been (mostly automatically) matched to the Hebrew or Greek words that they’re translated from.

Acknowledgements: The SR Greek text, lemmas, morphology, and VLT gloss are all thanks to the CNTR.
