SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:3–12: Jesus Christ will return and will reward his people as they deserve

This section begins the main part of Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians. Paul thanked God that the Thessalonian believers were still believing firmly in Jesus even though people were persecuting them. He also prayed that everyone would see that the Thessalonian believers were behaving in a manner that would please Jesus Christ when he returns.

Paragraph 1:5–10

It is a good idea to start a new paragraph here, because Paul was teaching about a different theme: God’s judgment. Throughout 1:5–10, Paul talked repeatedly about two related ideas:

  1. that the Thessalonian believers were suffering because non-Christians were persecuting them;

  2. that God would do what was right and just.

1:8a

in blazing fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God

in blazing fire: Commentators mostly agree that the Lord Jesus will appear surrounded by fire. In some Greek manuscripts, this phrase occurs at the beginning of 1:8. That is the verse division that the BSB follows, along with versions such as the CEV, ESV, and NET. In other Greek manuscripts, this phrase comes at the end of 1:7. That is where versions such as the GW, NCV, NIV, and RSV have it. Most commentators agree that it belongs grammatically with 1:7, and so it is recommended that you include it in 1:7.

those who do not know God: The use of the verb know here can be confusing. It refers to acknowledging God. Those who persecuted the believers had proved, by the way they behaved, that they did not know/acknowledge God. But Paul did not only mean the persecutors in Thessalonica; he was referring to all people who refuse to acknowledge God and obey him. Here are some other ways to translate this:

those who refuse to acknowledge God (GW)

those who reject God (GNT)

1:8b

and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus: Paul was referring to the same group of people here as in 1:8a.

obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus: This means “to do what the message of the gospel tells them to do.”

the gospel of our Lord Jesus: That is, the gospel about our Lord Jesus.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

διδόντος ἐκδίκησιν τοῖς

giving vengeance ˱on˲_the_‹ones›

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind vengeance, you can express this idea in another way. Since this is part of God’s justice, do not use a word that implies that God is doing something illegal or inappropriate. Alternate translation: [punishing the people] or [judging the ones]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τοῖς μὴ εἰδόσι Θεὸν

˱on˲_the_‹ones› ˱on˲_the_‹ones› (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐν πυρί φλογός διδόντος ἐκδίκησιν τοῖς μή εἰδόσι Θεόν καί τοῖς μή ὑπακούουσιν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ)

Here, the ones not having known God refers to those who have refused the relationship with God that he had offered to them. Alternate translation: [on those who did not want to know God] or [on those who have rejected God]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

καὶ τοῖς μὴ ὑπακούουσιν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: ἐν πυρί φλογός διδόντος ἐκδίκησιν τοῖς μή εἰδόσι Θεόν καί τοῖς μή ὑπακούουσιν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ)

The phrase, not obeying the gospel could refer to: (1) the same people as those not having known God. Alternate translation: [and who are not obeying the gospel] (2) a separate group. Alternate translation: [and also on those who are not obeying the gospel]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

ὑπακούουσιν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ

submitting ˱to˲_the gospel

The phrase, obeying the gospel is an idiom that means to live according to everything that God tells us in the gospel message. Alternate translation: [living according to the message of the gospel] or [heeding the admonitions that are part of the gospel message]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / possession

τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν, Ἰησοῦ

˱to˲_the gospel ˱of˲_the Lord ˱of˲_us Jesus

Here, Paul is using the general possessive form of our Lord Jesus to describe the gospel. The specific meaning here is that the gospel is about Jesus. Alternate translation: [the gospel that is about our Lord Jesus] or [the gospel message that tells us about our Lord Jesus]
