SIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 1:3–12: Jesus Christ will return and will reward his people as they deserve

This section begins the main part of Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians. Paul thanked God that the Thessalonian believers were still believing firmly in Jesus even though people were persecuting them. He also prayed that everyone would see that the Thessalonian believers were behaving in a manner that would please Jesus Christ when he returns.

Paragraph 1:11–12

Paul concluded this chapter by praying for the Thessalonian believers. He prayed that when the Lord Jesus returned he would find them worthy to enter his kingdom and that, in the meantime, God would enable them to behave in a righteous way.

1:11a

To this end, we always pray for you,

To this end: Most commentators and English versions agree that the word this in this phrase refers backward to some previous verses, but they do not agree about which precise verses are being referred to. There are three main possibilities:

  1. It refers to 1:10b–c.

  2. It refers to 1:5–10.

  3. It refers to 1:5.

If you need to be specific in your translation, it is recommended that you follow the first option (1). The second meaning line in the Display shows one way to do this.

1:11b

that our God will count you worthy of His calling,

our God: See the note on 1 Thessalonians 2:2c.

will count you worthy: The Greek word that the BSB translates as count…worthy here is the verb axioō. It is related to the word that the BSB translates as worthy in 1:5b. Here the scholars do not agree about how the verb should be translated. There are two possibilities:

  1. It means “regard/consider as worthy” The word then has the same meaning as the related word kataxioō in 1:5b. This is the view of the majority of the commentators. (BSB, NIV, KJV, REB, NASB, SSA)

  2. It means “make worthy.” (RSV, GNT, NJB, NET, CEV, NCV, NLT, GW)

It is recommended that you follow the first meaning (1), which has wide support in the commentaries.

of His calling: God has called the Thessalonian believers to be “his holy people,” “those who belong to him.” He has also called them to behave morally so that he will be pleased to call them his people.

1:11c

and that He will powerfully fulfill your every good desire

your every good desire: Most commentators and English versions agree that this means “every good thing you want/desire to do.”

1:11d

and work of faith,

work of faith: That is, “everything you do because you believe in Jesus.” This is parallel to 1:11c. If it is more natural in your language, you could combine 1:11c and 1:11d as follows:

We also always pray to God for you that he will powerfully enable you to do the good deeds that you want to do because you believe/trust in the Lord Jesus.

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-goal

εἰς ὃ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Εἰς ὅ καί προσευχόμεθα πάντοτε περί ὑμῶν ἵνα ὑμᾶς ἀξιώσῃ τῆς κλήσεως ὁ Θεός ἡμῶν καί πληρώσῃ πασᾶν εὐδοκίαν ἀγαθωσύνης καί ἔργον πίστεως ἐν δυνάμει)

Here, For this connects verse 11 to verse 10, so that verse 11 gives the means or method (prayer for the Thessalonian believers) for reaching the purpose that verse 10 has just described (for Jesus to “be glorified … and marveled at”). Use a natural way in your language for introducing this relationship. Alternate translation: [This is why] or [To this end]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

καὶ προσευχόμεθα πάντοτε περὶ ὑμῶν

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Εἰς ὅ καί προσευχόμεθα πάντοτε περί ὑμῶν ἵνα ὑμᾶς ἀξιώσῃ τῆς κλήσεως ὁ Θεός ἡμῶν καί πληρώσῃ πασᾶν εὐδοκίαν ἀγαθωσύνης καί ἔργον πίστεως ἐν δυνάμει)

Paul is using always as an exaggeration in order to emphasize how often he prays for them. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use an equivalent expression from your language. Alternate translation: [we also pray regularly for you] or [we continue to pray for you]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

τῆς κλήσεως

˱of˲_the calling

Here, calling refers to God appointing or choosing people to belong to him and to proclaim his message of salvation through Jesus. Alternate translation: [to appoint you to belong to him]

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

πληρώσῃ πᾶσαν εὐδοκίαν ἀγαθωσύνης, καὶ ἔργον πίστεως ἐν δυνάμει

˓may˒_fulfill (Some words not found in SR-GNT: Εἰς ὅ καί προσευχόμεθα πάντοτε περί ὑμῶν ἵνα ὑμᾶς ἀξιώσῃ τῆς κλήσεως ὁ Θεός ἡμῶν καί πληρώσῃ πασᾶν εὐδοκίαν ἀγαθωσύνης καί ἔργον πίστεως ἐν δυνάμει)

If your language does not use abstract nouns for the ideas behind desire, goodness, faith, and power, you can express these ideas in another way. Alternate translation: [he may make you able to do all of the good things that you want to do because you trust in Jesus and because God is powerful] or [he may empower you to act on what you believe in order to do good things in every way that you desire, because God is powerful]

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

καὶ πληρώσῃ

(Some words not found in SR-GNT: Εἰς ὅ καί προσευχόμεθα πάντοτε περί ὑμῶν ἵνα ὑμᾶς ἀξιώσῃ τῆς κλήσεως ὁ Θεός ἡμῶν καί πληρώσῃ πασᾶν εὐδοκίαν ἀγαθωσύνης καί ἔργον πίστεως ἐν δυνάμει)

Here, and he may fulfill adds another reason why Paul and his associates pray always for the Thessalonian believers. This part of the sentence assumes some of the words from earlier in the sentence. If this would be misunderstood in your language, you could supply these words from the earlier part of the sentence. Alternate translation: [and we also pray so that he may fulfill]
