BrTrAnd God put it into my heart, and I gathered the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, into companies: and I found a register of the company that came up first, and I found written in it as follows:

ULTAnd my God gave to my heart, and I gathered together the nobles and the prefects and the people to be enrolled by genealogy. And I found the book of the genealogy for the ones who came up at the first.
¶  And I found written in it:

USTSo as a first step towards filling Jerusalem with people again, God led me to gather together the leading citizens and the city officials and the other people living in the city to register them according to their family histories. I also found a book containing the records of the first group of people who had returned to Jerusalem from the exile. This is what those records said.

BSBThen my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials, and the people to be enrolled by genealogy. I found the genealogical register of those who had first returned, and I found the following written in it:

FBVMy God encouraged me to have everyone—the nobles, the officials, and the people—all come to be registered according to their family genealogy. I found the genealogical register of those who had returned first. This what I discovered written there.

T4TTo defend the city, we needed more people there. Then God gave me the idea to summon the leaders and officials and other people, and to look in the books in which were written the names of all the people and their clans. So I found the records of the people who had first returned from Babylonia. This is what I found written in those records:

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

7:4-5 Most people lived in the country near their fields, so the population of Jerusalem was small. Apparently, a registration would encourage more people to settle in and near Jerusalem (7:73).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

וַיִּתֵּ֤ן אֱלֹהַי֙ אֶל־לִבִּ֔י

and=he/it_gave God,my to/towards heart,my

The implication is that registering the people was a first step toward filling Jerusalem with people again, a process that Nehemiah will describe in chapter 11. If it would be helpful in your language, you could say that explicitly. Alternate translation: “as a first step towards filling Jerusalem with people again, God led me”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

וַיִּתֵּ֤ן אֱלֹהַי֙ אֶל־לִבִּ֔י

and=he/it_gave God,my to/towards heart,my

As in 2:12, Nehemiah’s heart represents his thoughts and will. Alternate translation: “God inspired me” or “led me”

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

וָאֶקְבְּצָ֞ה

and,assemble,

This word indicates that what Nehemiah did was in response to the situation just described. Alternate translation: “so I gathered together”

Note 4 topic: translate-unknown

אֶת־הַחֹרִ֧ים וְאֶת־הַסְּגָנִ֛ים

DOM the,nobles and=DOM the,officials

See how you translated these terms in 2:16. Alternate translation: “the leading citizens and the city officials”

וְאֶת־הָעָ֖ם

and=DOM and=DOM the,people

In context, this likely means “the other people living in the city.”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

לְהִתְיַחֵ֑שׂ

to,enrolled_by_genealogy

If it would be helpful in your language, you could say this with an active form. Alternate translation: “and to register them by genealogies”

לְהִתְיַחֵ֑שׂ

to,enrolled_by_genealogy

Alternate translation: “to be enrolled according to their family histories”

Note 6 topic: translate-unknown

וָֽאֶמְצָ֗א סֵ֤פֶר הַיַּ֨חַשׂ֙ הָעוֹלִ֣ים בָּרִאשׁוֹנָ֔ה

and,found writing the,genealogy the,came_back in/on/at/with,first

This means a list of the first group of Jews who had returned from exile, about a hundred years earlier. Alternate translation: “I also found a book containing the records of the first group of people who had returned to Jerusalem from the exile.”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

וָאֶמְצָ֖א כָּת֥וּב בּֽוֹ

and,found written in/on/over=him/it

You can say this with an active form, and you can say who did the action. Alternate translation: “I found that those people had written the following in it”

Temple of the Lord

The Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem, where all Israelite males were commanded to offer sacrifices to the Lord (Exodus 23:14-19; Deuteronomy 16:16-17), underwent several stages of reconstruction and development over hundreds of years. The first Temple was built by King Solomon to replace the aging Tabernacle, and it was constructed on a threshing floor on high ground on the north side of the city (2 Samuel 24; 1 Chronicles 21). Hundreds of years later King Hezekiah expanded the platform surrounding the Temple. When Jerusalem fell to the Babylonians in 586 B.C., the Temple was completely destroyed (2 Kings 25:1-21; 2 Chronicles 36:17-21; Jeremiah 39:1-10; 52:1-30). It was rebuilt in 515 B.C. after a group of Jews returned to Judea from exile in Babylon (Ezra 1:5-6:15; Nehemiah 7:5-65). Herod the Great completely rebuilt and expanded the Temple once again around 20 B.C., making it one of the largest temples in the Roman world. Jesus’ first believers often met together in Solomon’s Colonnade, a columned porch that encircled the Temple Mount, perhaps carrying on a tradition started by Jesus himself (John 10:23; Acts 3:11; 5:12). But Herod’s Temple did not last long: After many Jews revolted against Rome, the Romans eventually recaptured Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple in A.D. 70.
