MSG(5-14)“If thieves crept up on you,
they’d rob you blind—isn’t that so?
If they mugged you on the streets at night,
they’d pick you clean—isn’t that so?
Oh, they’ll take Esau apart, piece by piece,
  empty his purse and pockets.
All your old partners will drive you to the edge.
Your old friends will lie to your face.
Your old drinking buddies will stab you in the back.
Your world will collapse. You won’t know what hit you.
So don’t be surprised”—it’s God’s sure Word!—
“when I wipe out all sages from Edom
and rid the Esau mountains of its famous wise men.
Your great heroes will desert you, Teman.
There’ll be nobody left in Esau’s mountains.
Because of the murderous history compiled
  against your brother Jacob,
You will be looked down on by everyone.
You’ll lose your place in history.
On that day you stood there and didn’t do anything.
Strangers took your brother’s army into exile.
Godless foreigners invaded and pillaged Jerusalem.
  You stood there and watched.
You were as bad as they were.
You shouldn’t have gloated over your brother
  when he was down-and-out.
You shouldn’t have laughed and joked at Judah’s sons
when they were facedown in the mud.
You shouldn’t have talked so big
  when everything was so bad.
You shouldn’t have taken advantage of my people
when their lives had fallen apart.
You of all people should not have been amused
by their troubles, their wrecked nation.
You shouldn’t have taken the shirt off their back
when they were knocked flat, defenseless.
And you shouldn’t have stood waiting at the outskirts
  and cut off refugees,
And traitorously turned in helpless survivors
  who had lost everything.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

וְחַתּ֥וּ גִבּוֹרֶ֖יךָ תֵּימָ֑ן

and,shattered warriors,your Tēymān

Yahweh continues speaking to the people of Edom, but now he addresses them as Teman, which was the name of the region around their capital city. This part of Edom is now being used to represent the whole people. Alternate translation: “People of Edom, your strong soldiers will become terrified”

Note 2 topic: translate-names

תֵּימָ֑ן

Tēymān

Teman is the name of a region in the land of Edom. Yahweh is referring to the whole territory of Edom by the name of one part of it. Alternate translation: “O people of Edom”

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-logic-goal

לְמַ֧עַן

so_that

There is a cause-and-effect relationship here. Yahweh says in v. 8 that he will destroy the wise men in Edom, and here in v. 9 that the mighty men of Edom will be “dismayed” (that is, they will give up trying to fight). The people of Edom trusted in these two groups to protect them. So as a result of Yahweh destroying these two groups, no others in Edom will escape the invading armies, either. Alternate translation: “with the result that”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

יִכָּֽרֶת־אִ֛ישׁ

cut_off (a)_man

Here, cut off is a metaphor for being killed. The Edomites are pictured as part of the mountain where they live, and their death as being cut off from the mountain. Alternate translation: “your enemies will destroy all of you”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

יִכָּֽרֶת־אִ֛ישׁ

cut_off (a)_man

You could use an active verb form, and you could specify who will do the action. Alternate translation: “your enemies will destroy all of you”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / idiom

אִ֛ישׁ

(a)_man

Here, a man is an idiom that means “each person.” Alternate translation: “all you people”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / synecdoche

מֵהַ֥ר עֵשָׂ֖ו

from=hill ˊĒsāv

As in v. 8, Yahweh is referring to the whole territory by the name of this one part of it. See how you translated it there. Alternate translation: “from the land of Edom”

Note 8 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

מִקָּֽטֶל

by,slaughter

The abstract noun slaughter intensifies the idea of being cut off or killed. If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word slaughter, you can express the same idea with a verbal form. Alternate translation: “violently”

Note 9 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

מִקָּֽטֶל

by,slaughter

Some Bible translations put this phrase with verse 10, rather than with verse 9. If you choose to do that, verse 9 would end, “ … from the mountain of Esau.” Verse 10 would begin, “Because of slaughter, because of violence … ”
