MSG (5-14)“If thieves crept up on you,
they’d rob you blind—isn’t that so?
If they mugged you on the streets at night,
they’d pick you clean—isn’t that so?
Oh, they’ll take Esau apart, piece by piece,
empty his purse and pockets.
All your old partners will drive you to the edge.
Your old friends will lie to your face.
Your old drinking buddies will stab you in the back.
Your world will collapse. You won’t know what hit you.
So don’t be surprised”—it’s God’s sure Word!—
“when I wipe out all sages from Edom
and rid the Esau mountains of its famous wise men.
Your great heroes will desert you, Teman.
There’ll be nobody left in Esau’s mountains.
Because of the murderous history compiled
against your brother Jacob,
You will be looked down on by everyone.
You’ll lose your place in history.
On that day you stood there and didn’t do anything.
Strangers took your brother’s army into exile.
Godless foreigners invaded and pillaged Jerusalem.
You stood there and watched.
You were as bad as they were.
You shouldn’t have gloated over your brother
when he was down-and-out.
You shouldn’t have laughed and joked at Judah’s sons
when they were facedown in the mud.
You shouldn’t have talked so big
when everything was so bad.
You shouldn’t have taken advantage of my people
when their lives had fallen apart.
You of all people should not have been amused
by their troubles, their wrecked nation.
You shouldn’t have taken the shirt off their back
when they were knocked flat, defenseless.
And you shouldn’t have stood waiting at the outskirts
and cut off refugees,
And traitorously turned in helpless survivors
who had lost everything.

1:7 allies (literally men of the covenant): Edom should have been the ally of its brother Israel, but instead, Edom had made a covenant with Babylon.
• promise you peace (literally men of peace, paralleling men of the covenant): It was poetic justice that Edom’s treachery with Israel was rewarded by Babylon’s treachery against Edom.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
עַֽד־הַגְּב֣וּל שִׁלְּח֗וּךָ כֹּ֚ל אַנְשֵׁ֣י בְרִיתֶ֔ךָ
to the,border driven,you all men_of treaty,your
If it does not make sense in your language to say that someone would be attacked by someone with whom they have a covenant, that is, an ally, then you could add in the missing step of their betrayal, as in the UST.
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / youcrowd
בְרִיתֶ֔ךָ
treaty,your
Yahweh is still addressing the people of Edom here, so the word your refers to them.
עַֽד־הַגְּב֣וּל שִׁלְּח֗וּךָ
to the,border driven,you
Here, the border could mean: (1) It could refer to the border of the country of Edom. Alternate translation: “will force you out of your country” or (2) it could refer to the border of a formerly friendly country. Alternate translation: “will reject you from taking refuge in their country”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism
כֹּ֚ל אַנְשֵׁ֣י בְרִיתֶ֔ךָ & אַנְשֵׁ֣י שְׁלֹמֶ֑ךָ לַחְמְךָ֗
all men_of treaty,your & men_of peace,you bread,your
All three phrases refer to Edom’s allies. Yahweh is showing that what he is saying is important by saying it more than once in similar ways.
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis
לַחְמְךָ֗ יָשִׂ֤ימוּ מָזוֹר֙ תַּחְתֶּ֔יךָ
bread,your set trap for,you
Hebrew says simply your bread. In this poetic style, hearers and readers are expected to understand the meaning and supply the missing words The men of from the previous two lines.
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / aside
אֵ֥ין תְּבוּנָ֖ה בּֽוֹ
not understanding in/on/over=him/it
This phrase could mean: (1) Yahweh could be saying this as an aside in order to express his evaluation of the people of Edom. If this would be confusing in your language, you could continue the address to Edom in the second person, as in the UST. (2) the former allies could be saying this about Edom. Alternate translation: “Then they will say to you, ‘you are not as clever as you thought you were’” (3) It could be referring to the trap just mentioned. Alternate translation: “and there is no perception of it” (4) It could be referring to the shocking situation of Edom being betrayed by its allies. Alternate translation: “There is no understanding of this”
Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns
אֵ֥ין תְּבוּנָ֖ה בּֽוֹ
not understanding in/on/over=him/it
If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind the word understanding, you can express the same idea with a verbal form. Alternate translation: “He does not understand anything”
Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / personification
בּֽוֹ
in/on/over=him/it
Here, him probably refers to Edom, which represents the people who live there. Alternate translation: “in the people of Edom”
