TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:10 that day: The day of the Lord (2:2; 1 Thes 5:2-4; see “The Day of the Lord” Theme Note).

TTNTyndale Theme Notes:

“He Will Come”

Jesus promised his followers that he would return so that he could bring them to be with him forever (John 14:1-3). Immediately after Jesus ascended to heaven, the apostles received a message that he would someday come back (Acts 1:9-11). And in the visions that are recounted in the book of Revelation, John again hears from Jesus the promise of his return (22:6-20).

This final consummation of all things—the “day of the Lord” (2:2)—will come when least expected, like “a thief in the night” (1 Thes 5:2). Only the Father knows when that day will be (Matt 24:36; Acts 1:6-7). The present is not a time for speculation but for hope and confidence. Setting dates and times is not the way Christians should approach questions about the end. Scripture teaches about final things (eschatology) to give hope in the midst of trouble and perspective on present life and conduct. Hence, though Paul lays out certain events that will precede the day of the Lord, such as apostasy and the appearance of the man of lawlessness (2 Thes 2:1-12), the details are not the focus of his attention. Rather, he reminds his audience of these events (2 Thes 2:5) in order to refute false teaching and to encourage believers who are facing persecution (2 Thes 1:3-10).

When Christ comes, he will destroy the enemies of the Good News, rescue persecuted believers (2 Thes 1:7-10), and gather his followers to be with him for eternity (1 Thes 4:13-17). This future event calls for a present response. Those who receive the Good News and live for God can have confidence of rescue. Those who reject God will experience everlasting destruction. God’s choosing and calling of believers is their hope and comfort (2:13-14). They can stand firm in the present as they face the future (2:14-15), knowing what will be the outcome when he comes.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ὅταν ἔλθῃ & ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ

whenever ˱he˲_/may/_come & in (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἐνδοξασθῆναι ἐν τοῖς ἁγίοις αὐτοῦ καὶ θαυμασθῆναι ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς πιστεύσασιν ὅτι ἐπιστεύθη τὸ μαρτύριον ἡμῶν ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ)

Here, that day is the day when Jesus will return to the world. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could express that explicitly. Alternate translation: “on the day when Jesus returns to the world”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐνδοξασθῆναι ἐν τοῖς ἁγίοις αὐτοῦ, καὶ θαυμασθῆναι ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς πιστεύσασιν

/to_be/_glorified_in in the holy_‹ones› ˱of˲_him and /to_be/_marveled among all the_‹ones› /having/_believed

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “as his saints glorify him and all those who have believed marvel at him”

Note 3 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

ἐνδοξασθῆναι ἐν τοῖς ἁγίοις αὐτοῦ, καὶ θαυμασθῆναι

/to_be/_glorified_in in the holy_‹ones› ˱of˲_him and /to_be/_marveled

Here, the two verbs to be glorifiedand to be marveled at indicate the result of Jesus’ coming, not the purpose. Use a connector here that indicates result. Alternate translation: “as his saints glorify him and all those who have believed marvel at him” or “with the result that his saints will glorify him and all those who have believed will marvel at him”

ἐνδοξασθῆναι ἐν τοῖς ἁγίοις αὐτοῦ, καὶ θαυμασθῆναι ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς πιστεύσασιν

/to_be/_glorified_in in the holy_‹ones› ˱of˲_him and /to_be/_marveled among all the_‹ones› /having/_believed

The saints and the ones having believed are one group of people, not two. If your readers might be confused by this, you could combine these into one phrase. Alternate translation: “with the result that all of his saints, that is, the believers, will glorify him and marvel at him” or “as all of his people glorify him and marvel at him”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἐπιστεύθη τὸ μαρτύριον ἡμῶν ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς

/was/_believed the testimony ˱of˲_us to you_all

If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: “you have believed our witness when we shared it with you” or “when we testified about the saving power of Jesus Christ, you believed what we said”
