τίθημι

Strong’s: G5087

Associated OET lemmas: τιθέω · τίθημι

Notes: In this subdomain τίθημι[a] is by far the most generic expression.; This seemingly unusual use of τίθημι with τὰ ἱμάτια in RV JHN 13:4 · LV JHN 13:4 · Read together JHN 13:4 parallels the use of λαμβάνω in the sense of ‘putting on a garment’ in RV JHN 13:12 · LV JHN 13:12 · Read together JHN 13:12 (see 49.10: λαμβάνω).; Any meaning involving ‘to cause to be’ implies some change in state, and therefore one could classify these meanings under Subdomain B Change of State in Domain 13 Be, Become, Exist, Happen. However, the focus seems to be primarily upon the changed state rather than upon the process of moving from one state to another. The fact that a change of state has taken place seems to be semantically incidental.

Form 1

Part of speech: verb

Sense 14: to kneel down, to kneel

Semantic entry: 17.19

Semantic domains: Stances and Events Related to Stances

Subdomains: Kneel

Definition: (an idiom, literally: to place the knees, a Latinism) to kneel down before, with the implication of an act of reverence or of supplication

Notes: In a number of cultures, kneeling does not imply either reverence or an act of supplication. In some instances translators have used a functional substitute involving a similar type of stance, namely, ‘to bow low before,’ but it may be necessary to use a more or less literal description of ‘kneeling before’ and then to place in a marginal note an indication of the implications of such an act.

Sense 15: to die voluntarily, to die willingly

Semantic entry: 23.113

Semantic domains: Physiological Processes and States

Subdomains: Live, Die

Definition: (an idiom, literally: to lay down one’s life) to die, with the implication of voluntary or willing action

Notes: Though in English the phrases ‘to lay down one’s life’ or ‘to give one’s life’ do suggest a voluntary dying, a literal rendering of such expressions in other languages would not necessarily imply the same. It may therefore be necessary to use such expressions as ‘to die willingly’ or ‘to die without resisting.’ In some languages ‘willingly’ is expressed primarily as a negation of objecting, for example, ‘I will not object to dying.’

Collocations: τὴν ψυχὴν τίθημι
