λαμβάνω

Strong’s: G2983

Associated OET lemmas: λαμβάνω

Notes: λαμβάνω[b] in the sense of to acquire is highly generic.; There may be some subtle distinction in meaning between δέχομαι[a] on the one hand and λαμβάνω[c] and λῆμψις on the other, in that the latter set of meanings may imply more active participation on the part of the one who receives or takes the gift, but this cannot be determined from existing contexts.; There are no doubt certain subtle distinctions of meaning in this series of related expressions in 90.63: ἀπολαμβάνω / 90.63: ἐπιλαμβάνομαι / 90.63: λαμβάνω / 90.63: μεταλαμβάνω (ἀπολαμβάνω[e], ἐπιλαμβάνομαι[f], λαμβάνω[h], μεταλαμβάνω[b]), but it is difficult to determine the precise distinctions on the basis of existing contexts. As in the case of a number of verbs which mark an experiencer relation, an equivalent translation consists simply of a passive form of a verb related to the noun complement. For example, in the case of RV JHN 7:23 · LV JHN 7:23 · Read together JHN 7:23, one might very well translate ‘if a person is circumcised on the Sabbath.’; In RV HEB 11:36 · LV HEB 11:36 · Read together HEB 11:36 πεῖραν ‘trial’ is semantically redundant in that ἐμπαιγμῶν and μαστίγων contain by implication the semantic components of πεῖραν.; One might argue that λαμβάνω in RV JHN 13:12 · LV JHN 13:12 · Read together JHN 13:12 should have merely the common meaning of taking (18.1: δέχομαι / 18.1: λαμβάνω) or receiving (57.125: δέχομαι / 57.125: λαμβάνω / 57.125: λῆμψις), but in this context there is more involved than merely taking along an outer garment. The reference is clearly to the act of putting on the outer garment. It might be possible to explain this unusual sense of λαμβάνω in RV JHN 13:12 · LV JHN 13:12 · Read together JHN 13:12 as being based upon some kind of ellipsis.; The phrase πεῖραν λαμβάνω may be regarded as a so-called low-grade idiom, or λαμβάνω may be regarded as a relatively empty term which serves primarily to mark case relations.

Sense 15: to be prepared to suffer even unto death, to take up one’s cross

Semantic entry: 24.83

Semantic domains: Sensory Events and States

Subdomains: Pain, Suffering

Definition: (a productive idiomatic expression, literally: to take one’s cross) to be prepared to endure severe suffering, even to the point of death

Notes: The idiom ‘to carry one’s cross’ or ‘to take up one’s cross’ involves a number of important features of meaning. Unfortunately, this expression is frequently not understood correctly by many people who hear it or even use it. One reason for this is the actual absence of crucifixion in modern society. If a literal translation is to be employed, then some marginal note will probably be necessary in order to indicate clearly the full implications of such a statement.
