TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:3-14 This opening section begins with a thanksgiving, typical of New Testament letters. Paul thanks God for the Colossians’ progress in the faith and prays that they might understand it even better. With this prayer, Paul hints at his concern about the influence of false teachers.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

περιπατῆσαι ἀξίως τοῦ Κυρίου

/to/_walk worthily ˱of˲_the Lord

Here, the word walk is a figurative way to refer to behavior in life. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a comparable metaphor or express the idea plainly. Alternate translation: “to behave in the way that the Lord expects you to behave”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

εἰς πᾶσαν ἀρεσκείαν

in all pleasing

If your language does not use abstract nouns, you could express the idea behind the phrase pleasing way with a verb. If you use the following alternate translation, you may need to add a comma before it. Alternate translation: “doing everything that pleases him”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ἐν παντὶ ἔργῳ ἀγαθῷ καρποφοροῦντες

in every work good bearing_fruit

Paul is speaking of the Colossian believers as if they were trees or plants and of the things that they do as if it were their fruit. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea with a different figure or plainly. Alternate translation: “performing many good deeds”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

αὐξανόμενοι τῇ ἐπιγνώσει τοῦ Θεοῦ

/being/_grown ˱in˲_the knowledge ¬the ˱of˲_God

If your language does not use an abstract noun for the idea behind knowledge, you could express the idea with a verb. Alternate translation: “knowing God better and better”
