TSNTyndale Study Notes:

12:11-12 the sacrilegious object that causes desecration: See 8:13-14, 23-26; 11:29-35. See also study note on 9:27.
• God’s people must wait and remain faithful when the events of the end come.
• 1,290 days . . . 1,335 days: Some interpreters see these numbers as relating to specific events in the reign of Antiochus IV Epiphanes. Others see them as purely symbolic. The number 1,290 equals 43 lunar months of 30 days each, which is approximately 3½ years in the solar calendar. This might represent the final half of the final “set of seven” (9:27). The number 1,335 might represent simply an extra 45 days of waiting until the end. Those who endure the whole time, and then some, will see God act on behalf of his people.

SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 12:9–13

In this paragraph the angelic figure encouraged Daniel to persevere. He promised that at the end of time God will resurrect and reward those who persevere in righteousness.

12:12

Blessed is he who waits and reaches the end of the 1,335 days.

Blessed is he who waits and reaches the end of the 1,335 days: There are two ways to understand this verse part:

  1. It means that those who live through all the 1,335 days are blessed. For example:

Happy are those who wait and live to see the completion of one thousand three hundred and thirty-five days! (REB) (BSB, NIV, GW, GNT, NLT, CEV, NCV, REB, probably NJB, NABRE)

  2. It means that those who patiently live up to the beginning of the 1,335 days are blessed, that is, those who live to see those days. For example:

Blessed is he who waits and come to the thousand three hundred and thirty-five days (RSV) (RSV, ESV, KJV, probably NASB, NRSV, NET)

It is recommended that you follow interpretation (1),See the UBS Handbook, page 335, Miller, page 236, Lucas, page 298 (“the suffering has a time limit and will end fairly soon”), Hartman and Di Lella, page 261. along with the majority of English versions and several scholars. God counts or declares Blessed those who patiently endure until the end of the 1,335 days.

Blessed is he who waits: The people who patiently wait are Blessed in the sense that their situation is truly good, however it might appear, for God will reward them. Refer to how you translated this in Psalm 1:1, 32:1 and Matthew 5:3–11. Since God will bless anyone and everyone who waits in this way, in some languages it may be more natural to use plural forms. For example:

Happy are those who remain faithful (GNT)

God will bless everyone who patiently waits (CEV)

How good it will be for those who wait

the 1,335 days: This time period is equal to the 1,290 days mentioned in 12:11c plus a further 45 days. The significance of these extra days is not known, and you should try to translate literally.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

אַשְׁרֵ֥י הַֽמְחַכֶּ֖ה

happy [is]_the,[one_who]_waits

Alternate translation: “Blessed is the person who waits” or “Blessed is anyone who waits”

הַֽמְחַכֶּ֖ה

Alternate translation: “the one who remains faithful”

לְיָמִ֕ים אֶ֕לֶף שְׁלֹ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים וַחֲמִשָּֽׁה

to,days thousand three hundreds thirty and, five

Here days is referring to a period of time most commonly rendered as days. However, it can also imply years.
