TSNTyndale Study Notes:

12:8-10 God withheld exactly how and when all this would finally end. Daniel would not see the end (12:13); his job was to finish out his life in faith.
• purified, cleansed, and refined: God would use violent and terrifying times to improve the moral and religious character of his people (cp. 11:35).
• Being wise includes having insight into God’s ways and walking accordingly. The wicked will not understand or change their wickedness even if the vision is explained to them.

SOTNSIL Open Translator’s Notes:

Section 10:1–12:13: Daniel saw a vision of an angelic man and the end of the age

In this long final vision, Daniel was told of events leading up to the end of the age.

Paragraph 12:9–13

In this paragraph the angelic figure encouraged Daniel to persevere. He promised that at the end of time God will resurrect and reward those who persevere in righteousness.

12:9a

“Go on your way, Daniel,” he replied,

“Go on your way, Daniel,” he replied: The BSB places the words he replied in the middle of what the angelic figure said to Daniel. This is good English style. However, in some languages, it may be necessary to place these words at the beginning on 12:9a, where they are in the Hebrew text. For example:

He replied, “Go on your way, Daniel…” (NIV)

The angel replied to Daniel by giving him encouragement to continue his life, which was a life of faithful service. Daniel could go and continue fulfilling the duties he was given. Avoid translating this in a way that suggests that the angelic figure was telling Daniel to go away because he did not want to talk to him anymore.

Go on your way, Daniel: You should translate this command in a positive way that implies that God was pleased with Daniel’s way, that is, his manner of life. The angel was not rebuking Daniel. Here are some other ways to translate this:

Daniel, go about your business (CEV)

You may go/continue on your way, Daniel.

12:9b

“for the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end.

for the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end: This verse part gives the reason why Daniel could go on his way in peace. The things he had heard and written about were not for his time. In some languages it may be natural to translate this as a separate sentence. For example:

For these matters are closed and sealed until the time of the end. (NET)

the words are closed up and sealed: This is a figure of speech. The words that the angel had spoken are referred to as if they were themselves a scroll that Daniel had rolled up and sealed, so that it could not be read. Daniel had been commanded to do this in 12:4a. Here in 12:9b the scroll is not mentioned explicitly, but the verbs are the same. In your translation, try to use the same verbs that you used in 12:4a so that readers can see the connection and understand that Daniel obeyed the command.

Here are some ways to translate this figure of speech:

The verbs are closed up and sealed are both passives. The implied actor is Daniel (from 12:4a), or possibly God himself, who caused the words to be rolled up and sealed. So there are at least two ways to translate this clause:
