Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed as a tool for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

1:2 Hear this: Joel summoned the inhabitants of the land to pay close attention to the prophetic word.
• Leaders (literally elders): The prophet asked the community elders, has anything like this happened before? It hadn’t—this disaster was unique in the history of God’s people.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / parallelism
שִׁמְעוּ־זֹאת֙ הַזְּקֵנִ֔ים וְהַֽאֲזִ֔ינוּ כֹּ֖ל יוֹשְׁבֵ֣י הָאָ֑רֶץ
hear this(f) the,elders and,listen all inhabitants_of the=earth/land
See the discussion in the General Introduction to Joel of how Hebrew poetry consisted of paired phrases that meant basically the same thing. Decide as a translation team how you will represent this poetry in your translation throughout the book of Joel. Alternate translation: [Hear this, you elders! Yes, listen, all of the dwellers of the land!]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion
הֶהָ֤יְתָה זֹּאת֙ בִּֽימֵיכֶ֔ם וְאִ֖ם בִּימֵ֥י אֲבֹֽתֵיכֶֽם
the,happened this in/on/at/with,days_of,your_all's and=if in/on/at/with,days_of ancestors_of,your_all's
Joel is using the question form for emphasis. If a speaker of your language would not use the question form for that purpose, you could translate this as a statement or as an exclamation. Alternate translation: [This has not happened in your days or in the days of your fathers!]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
בִּֽימֵיכֶ֔ם וְאִ֖ם בִּימֵ֥י
in/on/at/with,days_of,your_all's and=if in/on/at/with,days_of
Joel is using the term days to mean a period of time by association with the way days make up longer periods of time. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [in your time or in the time of]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor
אֲבֹֽתֵיכֶֽם
ancestors_of,your_all's
Joel is not referring to the literal fathers of the Israelites whom he is addressing. He is using that term to mean their ancestors. If it would be clearer in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [your ancestors]
