TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:3-11 An explanation of all that God has given us in Christ (1:3-4) forms the basis for an urgent exhortation to grow in the knowledge of Christ (1:5-11).

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

ταῦτα γὰρ ὑμῖν ὑπάρχοντα καὶ πλεονάζοντα

these_‹things› for ˱in˲_you_all being and abounding

The word For here indicates that Peter is giving a reason why his audience should obey the command given in 1:5–7. Alternate translation: “Because these things existing and increasing in you”

Note 2 topic: grammar-connect-condition-hypothetical

ταῦτα γὰρ ὑμῖν ὑπάρχοντα καὶ πλεονάζοντα, οὐκ ἀργοὺς οὐδὲ ἀκάρπους καθίστησιν

these_‹things› for ˱in˲_you_all being and abounding neither idle nor unfruitful /is/_appointing

Peter is describing a conditional situation. If it would be helpful in your language, you could express it that way. Alternate translation: “For if these things are existing and increasing in you, then they will cause you to be neither barren nor unfruitful”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ταῦτα

these_‹things›

Here, these things refers back to the faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, endurance, godliness, brotherly affection, and love which Peter mentioned in 1:5–7.

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

οὐκ ἀργοὺς οὐδὲ ἀκάρπους καθίστησιν

neither idle nor unfruitful /is/_appointing

Peter speaks of a person who does not possess these qualities as if he were a field that will not produce a crop. If that is confusing in your language, you could use a different metaphor with that meaning or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “cause you to be neither unproductive nor useless”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / doublenegatives

οὐκ ἀργοὺς οὐδὲ ἀκάρπους καθίστησιν

neither idle nor unfruitful /is/_appointing

If your language does not use this passive form, you can state this in positive terms. Alternate translation: “cause you to produce and bear fruit”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / doublet

οὐκ ἀργοὺς οὐδὲ ἀκάρπους

neither idle nor unfruitful

The words barren and unfruitful mean basically the same thing. In combination with the negatives neither and nor, they are used together to emphasize that this person will not be unproductive but will experience great benefits from knowing Jesus. If it is confusing in your language to use two words together that mean the same thing, you could just use one word with that meaning. Alternate translation: “not unproductive”

Note 7 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

εἰς τὴν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν, Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ἐπίγνωσιν

for the ˱of˲_the Lord ˱of˲_us Jesus Christ knowledge

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun knowledge using a verbal phrase. Alternate translation: “in your knowing our Lord Jesus Christ”
