TSNTyndale Study Notes:

1:16-21 Peter’s denunciation of the false teachers (ch 2) is framed by this teaching about the certainty of Jesus’ return (see also 3:1-13). The false teachers were probably denying the reality of Christ’s return and judgment. Peter’s eyewitness experience (1:16-18) and the intrinsic reliability of scriptural prophecy (1:19-21) make Christ’s return a certainty.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-logic-result

γὰρ

for

For indicates that what follows is the reason that the statement of the previous verse is true. It could mean: (1) the prophets could not prophesy according to their own interpretations, because true prophecy could only come from the Holy Spirit. (2) no one can interpret prophecy without help from the Holy Spirit, because the prophecy came from the Holy Spirit. Alternate translation: “The reason for this is that”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

οὐ & θελήματι ἀνθρώπου ἠνέχθη προφητεία ποτέ

not & ˱by˲_/the/_will ˱of˲_/a/_human /was/_brought prophecy once

If your language does not use this passive form, you can express this with an active form, and you can state who did the action. Alternate translation: “no prophet ever prophesied by the will of man” or “the will of man never produced any prophecy”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / abstractnouns

οὐ & θελήματι ἀνθρώπου ἠνέχθη προφητεία ποτέ

not & ˱by˲_/the/_will ˱of˲_/a/_human /was/_brought prophecy once

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express the idea behind the abstract noun will with a verbal phrase, such as “what a man desires.” Alternate translation: “no prophecy was ever made according to what a man desires”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

θελήματι ἀνθρώπου

˱by˲_/the/_will ˱of˲_/a/_human

Peter is using the term man in a generic sense that includes both men and women. Alternate translation: “by human desire”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / metaphor

ὑπὸ Πνεύματος Ἁγίου φερόμενοι, ἐλάλησαν ἀπὸ Θεοῦ ἄνθρωποι

by /the/_Spirit Holy /being/_carried spoke from ˱of˲_God (Some words not found in SR-GNT: οὐ γὰρ θελήματι ἀνθρώπου ἠνέχθη προφητεία ποτέ ἀλλὰ ὑπὸ Πνεύματος Ἁγίου φερόμενοι ἐλάλησαν ἀπὸ Θεοῦ ἅγιοι ἄνθρωποι)

Peter speaks of the Holy Spirit helping the prophets to write what God wanted them to write as if the Holy Spirit carried them from one place to another. Alternate translation: “men spoke from God by the Holy Spirit directing them”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / ellipsis

ἐλάλησαν ἀπὸ Θεοῦ

spoke from ˱of˲_God

In this phrase, Peter is leaving out a word that it would need in many languages in order to be complete. If this word is required in your language, it can be supplied from earlier in the verse. Alternate translation: “spoke prophecy from God”
