This person is like a blind person who cannot see what is around him, or like a nearsighted person who can only see things that are close to him. This person has even forgotten that God has forgiven him for the sinful things he did in the past.

The phrase these things refers back to the faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, endurance, godliness, brotherly affection, and love, which Peter mentioned in 1:5–7.

In this metaphor, Peter speaks of a person who does not possess these qualities as if the person were blind or nearsighted. He means this in a spiritual sense, that this person cannot see what is spiritually important. If that is confusing in your language, you could use a different metaphor with that meaning or state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “he … is like a blind or shortsighted person who cannot see their importance”

Although the words blind and nearsighted have similar meanings, blind is more extreme than nearsighted, and a person cannot be both at the same time. If it is confusing in your language to describe someone using both of these words in this way, you could use a word like “or” between them or show how they might work together. Alternate translation: “he … is blind or nearsighted” or “he … is blindly nearsighted” or “he … is so nearsighted that he is blind to what is spiritually important”
